10 Ways to Save on Back-to-School Supplies

Back to School Savings

With the rising cost of gas, groceries, and just about everything else, people today are pinching their pennies like they never have before!  Here’s a list of 10 Ways to Save on Back-to-School Supplies.

-#1  Set a budget! This may sound like a waste of time but it is oh so important to staying on track financially throughout the year and in this instance for school shopping.

-#2 Plan ahead. Make a list of what you need before you leave home.  Don’t forget to check and see what items you can reuse from last year.  You may also want to bring bottled water and a small snack if you plan on being there a while.

-#3  Quality counts. Decide on which items you can buy cheap and which items it’s worth spending more on.  Crayons and clothes are probably worth the extra money because they will last longer.  Pencils and hair-bows will probably be the same regardless of the price.

-#4 Get your child involved. You don’t have to cave into every item that they want and you find repulsive but it’s a good idea to let them choose some.  Not only will it make the shopping experience more pleasant but they will be more likely to wear it, feel good in it, and take care of it.

-#5 Shop early for school supplies! With coupon usage on the rise you can find several manufacturers coupons for basic school supplies.  Pair them with Walmart’s earliest mark downs for the best deal.  Don’t forget office supply stores!  They have some great back-to-school bargains around the middle of summer. {We post a round up of the best deals weekly}

-#6 Buy clothing items that go with {almost} anything! I learned this trick from my great grandmother who grew up not having much.  Instead of buying a complete coordinating outfit that will  go with nothing else, opt for versatile articles that work well with each other.  This exponentially multiplies the number of potential outfits available.

-#7 Shop for off-season, clearance items.  When it is 99 degrees outside it is hard to go shopping for long-sleeve shirts and coats.   However, this is the optimum time to pick up clearance deals on these winter items as stores are practically giving them away.

-#8 Shop off-price retailers. Shopping at stores like TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Gabriel Bro., and Rugged Wearhouse will help you get quality {and designer} clothing at affordable prices.  Discount stores may offer similar prices but the quality is different.  For instance, at a discount retailer a $20 backpack was meant to sale at that price.  At off-price retailers, a $20 backpack was made by designers to sell at $40+.

-#9 Shop online. Especially if you know your child’s size in a brand, shopping online can save you big.  Don’t forget to search our Coupon Code Database for a coupon before you check out!  Shop through Ebates to get cash back in the form of a check!

-#10 Follow Embracing Frugality! You can follow Embracing Frugality on FacebookTwitter, or sign up for daily deal updates!

I hope these tips will help keep some extra money in your pocket this school year.  Do you have any back-to-school savings tips to share?  I would love to hear them!

My #1 Grilling Secret: GrillGrates

GrillGrates

Ashley has once again got me writing a blog review and you guessed, it is once again related to grilling!  I got the opportunity to review a product that I can’t stop talking about (No really, my friends are starting to make fun of me because I keep going on about it).  The product is called GrillGrates.  I have been wanting some of these ever since reading the rave reviews from Meathead on amazingribs.com which, as you may know by now, is my go-to resource for all things grilling.  In fact, this product is the very first item in his section on got-to-have grilling accessories where he refers to them as “…the best thing for grillers since salt and pepper”.  I could really stop this review right here since Meathead’s endorsement is worth a whole lot more than mine but, as I’ve previously mentioned, I can’t stop talking about these things so I’ll continue.

GrillGrates Locking

So what exactly are GrillGrates?  GrillGrates are sturdy, interlocking, aircraft grade aluminum panels designed to go on top of your existing grates to create a new grilling surface on any grill.  As the web site describes, the Grill Grates:
1. SEAR The Raised Rails deliver superior sear marks due to more surface area contact and better heat conductivity.
2. SIZZLE The Valleys capture juices and steam and sizzle for added flavor, moisture and juiciness.
3. RADIATE The added mass and shape radiates with heat for fast, even cooking.
4. PROTECT The Bottom protects against charring flare-ups and drying heat. Fats drain off and burn on the bottom of the GrillGrate not on the outside of the food.

GrillGrates Grill

I first got to looking at these when I decided to grill hamburgers and hotdogs for guests we were having over for our daughter’s first birthday party.  Previous experiences I have had with grilling large numbers (20+) of hamburgers have resulted in a whole lot of flames from grease flare-ups, hot spots, and mixed results on the burgers themselves, ranging from edible to charred hockey pucks.  So, needless to say, I was pretty nervous about it and wanted a solution.  I found the GrillGrates and had very high hopes for them based on all the good endorsements and the reviews focusing on the very things I had always struggled with in the past.  I was sold on the protection from flare-ups alone at this particular moment of party planning.

GrillGrates No Flare-ups

So, Ashley and I got in contact with the company and they got my GrillGrates shipped out to me just in time for the birthday party.  In fact, the party was the very first time I used them.  Nothing like experimenting with a new product on 20 guests!  Now I’m about to gush about these things so before going further let me just say that, yes, I did get three GrillGrate panels to review so perhaps I could have some bias and Ashley and I always disclose that information for that reason.  However, I will also say that I purchased two more panels so I could cover my whole grill.  So, yes, when I say I would buy these, I would and I did!  OK with that out of the way…Not only was I completely pleased with how these did on the 24 greasy burgers I cooked (with zero flare-ups, mind you), but so were all the men on the deck hanging out while I grilled.  You know how men swarm around the grill at these sort of things judging your every flip.  Ordinarily this would make me self-conscious being a typical, prideful male and not wanting to look like a fool like I usually do.  But I was grilling with the confidence of a pro with these things and I think I might have picked up some customers for GrillGrates just from among the spectators.  They were very impressive in their first outing to say the least.  At one point a guest watching saw me do a quarter turn on some burgers and said “You’re just doing that to get the nice grill marks, aren’t you?”, and I sheepishly replied “Yes”.  Usually I would be happy just to get a few burgers off before they are engulfed in flames and here I was showboating, putting perfect grill marks on 24 burgers like a movie star.  It was a good day.  Oh yeah, and my daughter had her first birthday too!

GrillGrates Spatula

In the past couple weeks I have tried out my GrillGrates on a variety of other foods as well.  They were perfect on chicken breasts and delicate fish.  The grate tool that comes with the panels fits in the ridges so you can lift delicate foods up instead of scraping under them.  I challenged myself once again on the 4th of July with a cookout with a few friends and family members.  I decided to try steaks.  I had a variety of steaks that folks wanted cooked to differing levels of doneness.  I did 2 filets (one medium and one well done), 2 ribeyes cooked medium, and a New York strip cooked well done.  Again, this would have been panic time without the GrillGrates but I had some confidence built up after the birthday party success so I went for it and they once again didn’t disappoint.  I did Meathead’s reverse sear.  Previously, I would follow Meathead’s directions and get to the sear part and have flare-up issues and char my steaks in that last step.  The GrillGrates seared the meat beautifully and all the flames got blocked out by the bottom of the panels so I had tremendous heat for the sear but no flare-ups.

GrillGrates Grilling

The most recent time I used them I followed Meathead’s recommendation once again (can you tell I like this guy’s web site!) to flip the GrillGrates upside down and used the flat surface as a griddle.  I flipped 2 panels over and made bacon on them while I cooked burgers on the other ones.  No worries about losing bacon through the grates, the bacon grease didn’t flare-up, and didn’t have to dirty another dish in the kitchen in order to have bacon burgers.  It worked like a charm.
Grilled Steak

The only negative thing I ever saw said about the GrillGrates was a customer review on Amazon with regard to them being difficult to clean.  I’m not sure how this person was attempting to clean them that didn’t work but I find them to be easier to clean than any grates I’ve ever owned.  They never rust.  They clean about 90% clean just by going over them with a grill brush or some wadded up foil after heating them up a bit and they cleaned up 100% clean with a steel wool pad in some water.  They do blacken a bit after use so maybe the reviewer was confusing a blackened look with being dirty.  They will change color but this is just normal from seasoning of the aluminum that only makes them better and it’s not dirt.

GrillGrates Chicken

They come apart for cleaning very easily and go back together just as easily.  In fact, transferring them from grill to grill is as easy as lifting something up and putting it back down.  Take them with when you are using a public grill at a park or move them from your gas grill to your charcoal grill. If I ever buy a new grill, they are going straight on there.  I’m not even waiting for the grates that come with it to go bad.  I expect my GrillGrates will outlive multiple grills.

GrillGrates is an American company and the panels are manufactured right here in the United States.  The panels are 5.25” wide and the standard length is 13.75” long.  They offer 4 other lengths and also have pieces cut to cover grills that are round instead of rectangular.  While they are designed to go on top of your existing grates, they also can be custom fit to completely replace your existing grates.  I would recommend calling them first to make sure you measure correctly.  They are a friendly company and will enjoy talking with you about that or any other questions you might have (877-380-2527) and they are also very responsive to emails info@grillgrate.com.

GrillGrates Collage

When I first discovered amazingribs.com and started to learn some things from a great teacher I really rediscovered a passion for grilling.  I got excited about it anew.  I had a similar experience when I got these GrillGrates.  Even following Meathead’s tips I would still have problems with flare-ups on my gas grill every time I tried to sear something.  He had good tips and techniques and wisely suggested moving meat to a place that doesn’t have a flare-up but sometimes my whole grill would be a flare-up!  So finding these GrillGrates and finding that they worked as advertised has really got me excited about grilling once again.  These GrillGrates would be a wonderful tool for any level of griller.  Meathead has them on almost every grill he has and several awards have been won by professionals using the GrillGrates.  But these are also perfect for beginners.  They eliminate a lot of the issues that inexperienced grillers struggle with and that may have turned people off of grilling altogether.  I can’t recommend this product more confidently or enthusiastically.  They are also a wonderful, unique gift idea for anyone who grills or would like to start grilling.

Disclosure: We received a GrillGrate package to facilitate this review but that in no way influenced our opinions.

How to Tell the Temperature of Cooking Oil Without a Thermometer

How to Tell the Temperature of Cooking Oil Without a Thermometer

Quick Instructions:

To check if oil temperature is hot enough for frying food, briefly place the end of a wooden spoon (or chopstick)  into the oil.  If it is at the appropriate temperature, the moisture in the wood will cause the oil around the spoon to bubble.

To be extra cautious and safe you should use a thermometer to check the temperature of the oil.  You can read a review of my favorite thermometer but this tip is for those occasions when you do not have a thermometer handy.  This is an old-fashioned method for finding the approximate temperature of the oil you’re frying.

Step by Step Instructions:

  • Just to be safe, I recommend having a fire extinguisher on hand whenever you’re frying with oil.
  • For best results when deep frying be sure and use an oil that has a high smoke point.  Peanut oil, safflower oil, soy oil, and refined sunflower oil are a few good options.
  • Heat the oil over medium heat.  If you heat the oil too fast it has the possibility of igniting so keep the oil on a medium heat.
  • Slowly dip the end of a wooden spoon (you can also use a chopstick or other wooden kitchen utensil) into the oil.
  • If the oil is at the appropriate temperature for cooking there will be bubbles in the oil around the spoon.
  • If no bubbles appear, wait a few moments and check again.
I hope this little tip helps you!  I forget when and where I first heard this but it has been a big help to me in the kitchen.  {Update: Recently, I’ve been using my favorite thermometer of all time, the Thermapen,to check the temperature of oil.  It’s amazing!}  If you have any cooking or homemaking tips to share I would love to hear them!

How to Find the Best Sunglasses for Your Face

Sunglasses

If you did not know this before, reading sunglasses are available in the hottest designer frames. Handy to bring to the beach, pool, or for sitting outside on a nice summer day, these glasses will give the appearance of standard sunglasses with the hidden aid of reading glasses.  How cool is that? These reading sunglasses can be found online at retailers like ReadingGlasses.com and in retail stores like Wal-Mart. However, if you are looking for the hottest in designer reading glasses for women, online is your best bet. Once you know your desired lens strength, it’s best to pick frame styles that best fit the shape of your face.  Here are some simple guidelines to go by:

Narrow
If you are a woman who has a narrow face, creating balance throughout your face should be a priority when it comes to choosing sunglasses. The best types of sunglasses for a narrow face are frames that have a straight top line. The angle from cat-eye glasses can help balance a narrow chin. Some styles, such as the Maui Jim Sandy Beach 408, also provide a rimless bottom for additional style.

Narrow-Average
A face that is only slightly narrow in certain areas, such as the chin or cheekbones, can wear styles that soften the contour of the face. This can be done with oval or square frames. The Maui Jim Makaha 405 provides a straight line at the top with oval lenses to balance out and narrow areas of the face, while still catering to the average part of the face.

Average
A woman with an average face can choose nearly any style of sunglasses she wants. Whether the frames are wide and full or thin and narrow, an average face can pull it off. The Maui Jim Honolulu 520 style sunglasses are an adventurous wraparound style that an average face would look great wearing.

Average-Full
Women will a slightly fuller face than average can still choose from many different styles of sunglasses. Styles such as the Maui Jim Longboard 222 work to balance fullness and provide great style.

Full
Women with a full shaped face will want to balance out the roundness and find a pair of sunglasses that give the illusion of a narrower face. Most women with a full face will want to look for sunglasses that are rectangular and have defined corners. A pair of sunglasses such as the Maui Jim Black Coral 249 provides a defined, angular shape that will make the face look a little longer.

To get more information and find a variety of options, visit a website like ReadingGlasses.com or do a Google search to find a highly rated shop.  There you can search for glasses that will best match the shape of your face, giving you the confidence to choose a great pair of sunglasses, all without leaving your living room!

5 Quick Tips for Getting Your Husband Looking Great

happy urban couple

When there is a rush to get out the door and your husband needs to be looking great, it might be tough to pull him together. However, there are a few quick and painless ways to make sure he looks good. With just a few minutes and perhaps a little preparation, going out can be as easy to him as dressing for yard work.

Keep His Wardrobe Up to Date

Sometimes it is hard to rush out the door when your husband has nothing to wear. In order to make those rushed evenings easier, make sure his dry cleaning is done well in advance and that his clothes fit him well. Something like a Brooks Brothers suit can make your husband look great just by fitting his form properly.

Beard or No Beard

Your husband may not have had enough time to shave. In these cases, make a quick decision about his facial hair. Have him do a once over with an electric shaver that leaves a quarter-inch of stubble before dressing instead of having him carefully shave. Many men look dashing with a five o’clock shadow.

Hair Without the Fuss

Instead of trying to make his hair look perfect and stay put, let his hair look naturally good with a little help. Rub a quarter-sized dollop of gel on your palms and rub it through his hair, letting it stay just a little messy. That slightly messy look can go over well even at fancy dress events, so do not sweat it.

Odds and Ends

In three minutes, you can pull together all of the little things that will make your husband very attractive for the evening. Run a lint brush over his clothes to make sure he looks sharp and clean. Give him a nice cologne or aftershave. Lastly, if his shoes need a polish and you lack the time for a buffing, just rub a little polish on a washcloth and rub it into his shoes in a circular motion. Take one minute per shoe.

Accessories

A man does not need accessories to look sharp. Therefore, if your husband is wearing accessories that are inappropriate for the evening, such as a paint smeared work watch, have him go without accessories. If he has the right accessories handy, bring them along in the car. He can get them on in a hurry as you go.

Remember that there are some things that cannot be done in a rush out the door. For example, ironing and washing. Try to make sure these are done ahead of time so your husband only needs a bit of the above to look amazing.

This was a guest post written by my friend Amanda.  I hope you enjoyed it!  What tips do you have for helping your husband look great?

Reduce Odors with Filtrete Air Filters

Filtrete Odor Reduction Filter

For years I have battled with allergies.  Some places I’ve lived have made it easier to deal with than others but unfortunately living in this part of North Carolina has me continually struggling.  I try my best to keep the floors vacuumed, surfaces dusted, sheets changed, windows shut, and air filters up to date.  I’m a huge fan of Filtrete air filters for a little allergy relief but now they have a new Odor Reduction Filter!  A filter that blocks dust, and pollen, and ickiness is great on it’s own but now it helps minimize obnoxious odors!  I’m in love!

Healthy living expert and author Lisa Beres has shared tips with us on how to naturally remove odors from the home and I hope you find them helpful.  I know I have!

Lisa’s tips include:

  • Clean the fridge drawers and shelves by adding a few drops of natural dish soap to a bowl of baking soda and stir until it creates a thick paste.  This will remove odors as well as stains left behind from food.
  • To rid towels of the mildew smell, first wash them once in hot water with a cup or two of white vinegar. Then wash them again with a natural or eco-friendly laundry detergent. Finally, dry the towels in the dryer on high heat.
  • Reduce the unpleasant smell of pet dander by bathing and grooming your pet weekly.
  • Pesky ants and other insects can make their way into your kitchen but instead of using harsh toxins, set a line of coffee
    grinds, lemon juice, cinnamon or cayenne pepper around doors and windows to create an effective barrier they won’t cross.  {I need to try this!}

Filter Benefits:

  • 65 times more effective than other carbon filters at removing odors, such as those from cooking, tobacco smoke, pets, mildew and cleaning chemicals. {65% is HUGE!}
  • Starts to remove even the strongest odors in minutes, after the furnace fan is turned on.
  • Captures large airborne allergens such as household dust, pollen, mold spores and dust mite debris.
  • Captures microscopic particles such as smoke, pet dander and smog.
  • Last up to three months for odor removal and particle capture for air passing through the filter.

These Odor Reduction Filters have a suggested retail price of $15.99 which isn’t much more than a regular filter!  They can be found at your local hardware, home center, grocery store, or they can be purchased online.

I LOVE this!  Filtrete has an eNewsletter that will email you when it’s time to change your filter!  I’m actually going to sign up for that right now because we’re always a month late.  They’ll also email you clever tips and money-saving coupons.  You can also follow @Filtrete on Twitter and like Filtrete on Facebook to stay up to date on their latest products and promotions.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Filtrete and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

Choosing the Best Vacation

Beautiful vacation spot

If you ever decide to go on vacation you’re left facing a number of difficult choices. Making the right ones should mean that your break will be an enjoyable, but what are those decisions, and what do you have to think about before booking a vacation? Before you think about deciding to book a luxury cottage with cumbrian-cottages.co.uk, or a laid back TN Bed & Breakfast, here is what you need to ask yourself in order to choose the best vacation for your family:

  • Work out where you want to go. If you have a clear idea of your ideal destination, then you should do all you can to seek the right accommodation. Also, the destination should have what you and anyone else, who’s coming with you, likes to do.  For example, if you’re travelling with kids and you all enjoy walking, you should visit somewhere like the Lake District with its many walking routes.  If not all of your family can swim a trip to a water park might not be too enjoyable.  Just think about what relaxing activity your entire family would enjoy.
  • Know what you can afford. You should try to find a vacation that fits easily within your budget. In doing so, you’ll have enough money left over to spend on things like food, travel and souvenirs.  Personally I have to avoid souvenir shops because I get sucked in and want to buy every t-shirt and key chain they’ve got but that’s another story.  If you don’t have enough money in your budget to go to a big resort this year scale back to a smaller vacation spot or save up for next year.  Don’t use a credit card to fund your vacation!
  • Is the accommodation suitable? You should get accommodation that’s big enough for you and everyone else who’s coming with you. Staying somewhere that’s too big or too small could ruin your vacation.  This usually isn’t a problem unless you have a very large family or you’re vacationing with another family.

Aside from choosing a vacation which suits your needs and tastes, you should also be wary of a number of things before making a final decision. These include any extra costs you have to pay for.  For instance,  parking and internet access, local facilities, and transportation.  You may also want to take note if a destination is family-friendly, pet-friendly or if they have wheelchair access. Also, if you’re heading to the beach you may want to avoid special weeks like Senior Week and Biker Week.  Once you know all of that, you’re ready to pick a place and hunt for the best deal!
