Cruciferous Vegetables: Green Crusaders for Breast Cancer and Healthy Skin

I recently read an interesting article about a cancer study that took place in China from 2002 to 2006.  The study showed signs that eating cruciferous vegetables had an apparently significant impact on breast cancer survival rates.  Interestingly enough, I also recently read an article that was sent to me by a friend, which touted the beneficial effects that these same cruciferous vegetables have on our skin.  As both breast cancer and living with healthy skin are things that I think most women have a natural tendency to worry and wonder about, I thought it might be helpful to post a bit that I found interesting in both pieces.

In the first case, the apparent link between breast cancer survivors staying healthy and eating cruciferous vegetables lies in the phytochemicals within these vegetables, called indoles and isothiocyanates.  Both of these elements, which are specific to these vegetables, have been widely researched and are generally thought to protect against some types of cancers.  The study showed that compared to those women who ate the lowest doses of cruciferous vegetables, those who ate the highest doses had a sixty-two percent reduced chance of both general mortality, and breast cancer induced mortality.  It also showed that these women had a thirty-five percent reduced chance of reoccurrence of breast cancer when compared against the same group.  With figures like these, it’s hard to ignore the beneficial punch that these vegetables can seemingly pack.  But they don’t stop there.

In the case of healthy skin, cruciferous vegetables often contain beneficial antioxidants including vitamins E and C, especially in broccoli and Brussels sprouts in particular.  These vitamins contribute not only to healthy skin but also to healthy hair and eyes as well.  In addition, cabbage contains beta-carotene, which aids in body tissue regrowth and has been shown to protect skin from sun damage.  Beta-carotene is also converted into vitamin A once inside our bodies, and is the most effective and safe way to get your necessary dose of this important vitamin.

If you’re anything like me, it’ll be hard not to think twice the next time you find yourself in the grocery store wondering what to pickup for dinner.  A wise action hero once said, “knowing is half the battle.”  In this case, with our lives and personal health at hand, it seems like a bit more than half.  I’m just glad I had the good fortune of finding this helpful information and could share it with you all here.

What The Bible Says About Exercise

Healthy Living

Since it’s now a few months past our new years resolution and many people included getting healthy/ losing weight in their resolutions, I thought I’d chime in with some of my thoughts today on exercise!

There is only one time that physical exercise is mentioned in the Bible and it is in I Timothy 4:8 – which reads “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

The Bible affirms that “physical training is of some value“. What does this mean for you personally? Could you have any ailments that you think physical exercise could help? Studies show that exercise gives us physical and mental energy, it makes our muscles and bones stronger, reduces fatigue, depression, and anxiety, helps us sleep better, fights heart disease, and generally gives you a longer, healthier life. “Physical training is of some value.”

Is exercise important to you? Do you exercise for vain reasons? At one time I can tell you that vanity was attached to my exercise. But now that I’ve had a baby and my body has changed (more than I would care to admit) it is less about vanity and more about being healthy.

I won’t list my ailments for you – but I do suffer from hypersomnia which I take medication for and also neck pain due to an old injury. My neck pain literally melts away with regular workouts and sleep. As soon as I stop exercising or sleeping well it returns back in full force. “Physical training has some value” and without it I suffer and my entire family suffers.

I value my exercise time so I have to make it a priority and somehow squeeze it into my routine.  When do I do it?  I have my quiet times in the morning so that free time is taken! Then my busy day begins and is packed full with my family and responsibilities. For me the best time (and the worst time) is at the end of my exhausted day!  Most often at this time of day all I want to do is snuggle up on the couch in my pj’s and hubby, turn on the television and grab my computer – but instead I have disciplined myself to spend 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week exercising.  It’s rare but some days I’ll exercise in the middle of the day.  If I can fit this in during the day it leaves my entire evening free to spend with my family and it gives me more energy to go about my daily activities.

When I fall off the bandwagon, there’s no motivator like a sharp pain the neck to remind me that I need to exercise!

So I want to encourage you that if you suffer from fatigue, low energy, and aches and pains, and you think – “but there’s just not enough time” – you must make exercise a priority – it has some value! It is not a waste of time – it is an investment into your life– your quality of life. Pray and ask God to help you.  Get moving at least 15 minutes three times a week.  And then live your life passionately for God – with energy!

Disclaimer: While exercise can do wonders for your mood I’m not suggesting that serious depression should be ignored or only treated with exercise.  If you believe that you are suffering from depression please see your doctor for PCH treatment or another form of care to treat your depression.

How to Get Wavy Hair

My hair is as straight as a board so I’m always looking for a new way to curl my hair.  It may be because it reminds me of summer but lately, I’ve been in love with the wavy look.  There are about a million different ways to curl your hair to achieve wavy locks but this five-step process has proven to work the best for me.

1. Use a curling iron that gets really hot.

2. Wrap hair around the curling iron and away from your face.  Don’t use the clamp and hold it there for about 15 seconds.

3. Repeat this all over your head using small sections of hair.

4. Spray hair with a shine serum that has a little hold or a light hairspray that adds shine.

5. Scrunch hair to mess it up slightly so your curls look natural and not perfect!

Give it a try and let me know what you think or if you have any wavy hair suggestions please feel free to share them!

Jonathan Gale’s Interview with Embracing Beauty

Jonathan Gale

I am so excited to share with you an interview I had with a TOP hair colorist!  Johnathan Gale is a colorist at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in LA.  He was even voted US Magazine Hair Colorist of the Year!  Johnathan Gale is a master of the art of hair coloring.  He has had a successful career in both the UK and the US that includes high fashion editorials, high publicity advertising and celebrity clients.  Johnathan has worked on advertising for Versace, L’Oreal, Calvin Klein, and Prada.  He works with the likes of Charlize Theron, Diane Keaton, Keri Russell, Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Meg Ryan and Jennifer Garner.  How incredible is it that he took time to have an interview exclusively for you?

1. What is a day in the life of Jonathan Gale like?

I am a morning person. The sun rises, the light shows up and I’m ready for action. I have a lot of well-being intentions I start with when I wake. I sleep really well and like to remind myself to be of service and of deep gratitude for this life.

I love to walk often and hike in Runyon Canyon. I also like to just walk in my neighborhood then go work out at the gym.  Stretching is key I have found.

I like to start work early. I am at the salon by 8:30am just as the staff begins laying flowers atop the pool within the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon. I’m big on breakfast and begin thinking about lunch as soon as I’m done. If I’m en route to the airport or going to be on set or at the salon, I’m always looking for healthy food, juices and treats. I find that if I eat right, I’ll have energy for days.

I work in the salon four days a week. My first appointment might be with Debi Mazar, following by an afternoon with Amber Valetta. By the time Jennifer Love Hewitt or Ellen Pompeo comes in, the salon is really busy. All the actresses know each other, it’s a lot of fun and it almost feels as if I’m on a set.

Because it’s award season, it’s a particularly busy time of year because everyone is making sure they look their best for walking the red carpet.

I also spend a lot of time in communication with directors, making sure the characters these actresses are playing are going to be expressed correctly on screen.

I like to cram a lot into my days right now. I’m learning to play guitar and spending time with a composer, creating some joyful meditation music which is so much fun. I study well-being and am constantly learning how to express, create and play. My clients benefit from my playfulness.

All of this is what makes my days and my career so much fun.

2. How did your career begin in the world of beauty?

My career began at home, from my sister to all the neighbors on the street. From the age of 14, I was captivated by transforming the people around me. My first job in hair was at when I was 18 years old as an apprentice for Daniel Galvin and Jo Hansford in London Mayfair.

3. As one of the top color artists in the business, are there any celebrities whom you would still like to work with that you haven’t as of yet?

Madonna. I have some great ideas for her. I also really enjoy working with artists, so there are plenty people I would love the opportunity to create with.

4. What are some common hair mistakes that women make?

In my opinion, the biggest mistake women make is going too light. They just decide they’re bored with their color, decide to be another color and don’t take into consideration their eyebrow tone, their skin tone, eye color, eye setting, etc.

Instead, I like to make sure they get what they want by still achieving that light “feeling” without doing the standard light all over coloring. I take an artist’s approach. I like exotic features, therefore I like to enhance these modalities. Instead of changing someone, I like to take someone’s authenticity and just “bump it up a bit.”

5.  What are your top suggestions for treating damaged hair?

The first thing you must do when treating damage hair is deal with the water you’re washing with. Buy a filter for your shower–your health will benefit also. This will help remove the harsh chemicals from your water and keep your hair in amazing shape.

The other suggestion for treating damaged hair is the realization that is takes a lot of effort. There is a myriad of products out there…get and use whatever you can find. Use them twice a week, be consistent, and your hair will benefit.

6.  What do you suggest Embracing Beauty readers do to achieve the perfect frizz-free look everyday?

I love John Frieda’s arsenal of anti-frizz products. I also love Rene Furterer’s Fioravanti leave in detangler.

How to Store Pantry Food & Maximum Shelf Life

Lock & Lock
I’m sure we’re all aware of the benefits of a well-stocked pantry.  It’s essential for menu planning organization, it helps maintain a diet full of real foods, and saves you a lot money by allowing you to stock up on foods when they hit their rock bottom price.  (See our printable price list).

But if food is not stored properly it spoils and loses all value.  That is why it is imperative to know the proper way to store pantry food & maximum shelf life.

The food wasted in the average North American kitchen is enormous.  Way too much food (and money) are being thrown away!  The numbers are shameful.  Is your kitchen contributing to the problem?  If so, I have some suggestions to help you save more and throw away less.

Food spoilage occurs when:

  • Food is low quality and/or damaged when purchased.
  • Food items are old, older, and embarrassingly old!
  • Food is stored incorrectly, allowing for contamination to occur.

What damages food? Air. Heat. Cold. Light. Moisture. Smells. Tiny critters.  Any of these factors could damage your hard-earned food but they can be prevented!

Ever since I discovered my entire stockpile overtaken with mice I have taken no chances with my pantry items.  I kept my overflowing stockpile in our garage.  What was I thinking?  I had two tables stacked on top of one another and a blanket between the two and flowing down the back so they wouldn’t get scratched.  We had dozens of tiny little mice in just about everything.  It was so painful to throw away garbage bags of food.  Thankfully, we have learned our lesson and now keep all food indoors.

I didn’t just stop at bringing food items indoors.  In my home items are rarely left in their initial packaging and great care is taken to store them properly.  I have became a fan of Lock & Lock bins and glass jars for storage.  I don’t consider plastic bags or cardboard boxes effective for long term food storage.  Thankfully we don’t have any rodents in our home but if we did it would be no problem for them to gnaw through cardboard.   All dry ingredients need to live in a hard container like glass, hard plastic or metal and I use a combination of all three.  These containers also help combat against moisture and air.

Here is what I do personally but you may have a different solution that works well for you.

Glass Jars

Most of my dry pantry items are stored in glass jars. So are a lot of fridge and freezer items, for that matter. They are a great option because they are inexpensive, recyclable, and airtight.

Food I store in glass jars: Tea bags, grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, dried herbs, pasta and more.

Plastic Storage Containers

My favorite storage container of choice is Lock & Lock.  They are durable, airtight, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any food item.  Some friends I know prefer Tupperware because they have a lifetime guarantee.  Now, don’t quote me on that!  This is just hearsay from my friends. : )

I label the outside of my containers with a cutout from the original package and cover with scotch tape.  It’s not ultra classy but it gets the job done.

Food I store in Plastic Containers: Flours, sugars, cereal, pasta, chocolate, crackers, bread crumbs, oatmeal, pancake mix, and more.

Tins

Tins are ideal for containing small, easily scattered items like nuts or yeast packets. Tins also offer a dry, dark, and airtight space.  The obvious drawback to tins is that you can’t see what is inside and I rarely use tins for food for this reason.  For me, what’s out of site is out of mind with me and I’m not careful enough to make sure items don’t spoil.

Foods/items I store in tins: Coffee, dried chilies, yeast, gelatin, and more.

Pantry Items to Store in the Freezer

Several foods can be kept in the freezer to extend storage life, especially during the humid months.

  • Flours
  • Nuts
  • Spices – especially ground spices
  • Grains such as wheat germ and flax
  • Seeds – sunflower, sesame, etc
  • Vitamins (I don’t know if the freezer preserves them any better but it’s what my grandma always told me)

I’ve read that ground spices keep their condition and quality best when stored in an airtight container in the freezer.

Food for Thought: Share Your Bounty with Others

When so many people live daily around us with so little, we’re fortunate to have a stocked pantry.  Don’t forget to share your extras with local shelters, food banks, or churches to help feed those in need around you.

Is there anything wasting away in your pantry right now?

Protect Your Skin This Winter

Dry Skin

Winter can be a harsh time for your skin, with central heating, hair dryers, cold air and nippy winds all causing damage. While cold temperatures and strong winds can leave your skin feeling dry and chapped, turning the heating up is no solution. Spending a lot of time in centrally heated spaces will cause further dehydration of the skin. Worse still, moving between very cold and very warm temperatures – such as entering a heated building after a long walk in the cold – can cause further irritation.

While it can be difficult to fit a thorough skin-care routine into your everyday life, if you have enough time to spare why not spend a few hours giving your skin a little TLC? Apply a face mask, use one of a suitable brand of waxing kits, follow it up with a high quality moisturiser and give yourself and your skin a much-needed break.

Alternatively, by following an efficient skincare routine, you can easily minimise the negative effects that winter has on your skin, keeping you looking fresh and healthy throughout the party season and right up to spring.

One of the simplest, cheapest, most effective and most frequently overlooked ways to protect your skin throughout the winter is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is just as important in winter as it is during the summer, although it can be more difficult to remember to do so. Try to keep a bottle of water close to hand at all times, to drink from while you work or relax. Deciding on how many bottles you need to get through each day in order to keep hydrated will give you an easy objective to keep in mind. You can also top up your water intake by drinking herbal teas, which will warm you up without the dehydrating effects of caffeinated hot drinks such as coffee or tea. It is also important to use a good moisturiser on both your hands and your face to keep them feeling smooth. Use a skin cream or primer underneath your foundation to keep your skin moisturised throughout the day.

Drinking fruit juices or eating fruit and vegetables that contain a high percentage of water will not only make it easier to keep hydrated, but will also keep you healthy and protect you from colds, which can leave your skin looking even worse. Colds and ‘flu can cause redness, inflammation, acne and cold sores. While the first three of these are easier to disguise using concealer and foundation, cold sores are more difficult to treat and can be irritating or painful. Wearing good-quality lip balm and making sure you get plenty of vitamins A, C and E will reduce your chances of developing cold sores, while acyclovir cream should help to reduce their effect in the event that you feel one developing.

Sleep is another important, yet frequently forgotten, essential to help protect your skin through the winter. While this is, of course, true all year round – dark circles and a haggard face is never an attractive look – it is especially true during the winter. Not only does the festive season bring with it the party time of year, but our increased dependence on harsh, artificial lighting during the winter months makes it even harder to disguise how little sleep you managed to grab the night before! Try to get at least eight hours’ sleep for at least four or five nights each week to keep your skin looking fresh and radiant.

Firefox 10 Is Here. Should You bother?

Firefox

Firefox version 10 is now here.  Do you know what version you have?

Mozilla’s has unleashed seven major browser overhauls in the past 10 months.  Until today, I was using version 4 that was released in March of 2011!

Firefox 10 made most it’s changes under-the-hood but there are some external changes for developers to enjoy.  Improvements include better add-on capability and lightweight built-in developer tools.

I won’t pretend to understand the details of the developer tools but I know that Firefox 10 works much faster than my previous version.  What do you think of Firefox 10?  Are the new updates enough to win you back from Chrome or Safari?  I would love for you to share your thoughts in the comments.
