Candidate for Lt. Governor, Dale Folwell’s Taxpayer Information Act

Candidate for LT. Gov. Dale Folwell

The Taxpayer Information Act (HB 315), is the brilliant idea of NC Speaker Pro Tem and candidate for Lt. Governor, Dale Folwell. The Taxpayer Information Act will make it clear to see what local government is seeing when they propose bond measures.  I think transparency is a wonderful thing!  This act, if it is passed, will let taxpayers know exactly how much they will be on the hook for.  Just as mortgage providers are required to tell borrowers the final cost that they are incurring with both the principal and the interest, the government should explain to the taxpayer what they are seeking to borrow on their behalf.

Someone explained it like a couple going to a restaurant to eat.  The couple had a lovely dinner and enjoyed stretching their budget to it’s max at $50 for the two meals.  When the check comes they see that they actually owe $90.  They can’t imagine how this happened so they quickly call the waiter back to the table.  He kindly explains that the advertised price didn’t include gratuity, tax, and an environmental charge.  The restaurant knew that these charges would be added the entire time and the couple has a right to feel cheated.  Voters, not just in North Carolina but all over the country, are being fooled into approving new public debt without understanding the final cost of the bill.

I’m proud to see NC in the national news for something good.  If NC can be a leader for our nation in an area, I’m glad that it’s transparency.  We need more of that in both our local and national governments!

Reminder:  Early voting started yesterday in NC so get out there, find a voting site near you, and go vote!

Cruciferous Vegetables: Green Crusaders for Breast Cancer and Healthy Skin

I recently read an interesting article about a cancer study that took place in China from 2002 to 2006.  The study showed signs that eating cruciferous vegetables had an apparently significant impact on breast cancer survival rates.  Interestingly enough, I also recently read an article that was sent to me by a friend, which touted the beneficial effects that these same cruciferous vegetables have on our skin.  As both breast cancer and living with healthy skin are things that I think most women have a natural tendency to worry and wonder about, I thought it might be helpful to post a bit that I found interesting in both pieces.

In the first case, the apparent link between breast cancer survivors staying healthy and eating cruciferous vegetables lies in the phytochemicals within these vegetables, called indoles and isothiocyanates.  Both of these elements, which are specific to these vegetables, have been widely researched and are generally thought to protect against some types of cancers.  The study showed that compared to those women who ate the lowest doses of cruciferous vegetables, those who ate the highest doses had a sixty-two percent reduced chance of both general mortality, and breast cancer induced mortality.  It also showed that these women had a thirty-five percent reduced chance of reoccurrence of breast cancer when compared against the same group.  With figures like these, it’s hard to ignore the beneficial punch that these vegetables can seemingly pack.  But they don’t stop there.

In the case of healthy skin, cruciferous vegetables often contain beneficial antioxidants including vitamins E and C, especially in broccoli and Brussels sprouts in particular.  These vitamins contribute not only to healthy skin but also to healthy hair and eyes as well.  In addition, cabbage contains beta-carotene, which aids in body tissue regrowth and has been shown to protect skin from sun damage.  Beta-carotene is also converted into vitamin A once inside our bodies, and is the most effective and safe way to get your necessary dose of this important vitamin.

If you’re anything like me, it’ll be hard not to think twice the next time you find yourself in the grocery store wondering what to pickup for dinner.  A wise action hero once said, “knowing is half the battle.”  In this case, with our lives and personal health at hand, it seems like a bit more than half.  I’m just glad I had the good fortune of finding this helpful information and could share it with you all here.

My Family Tree

I have always had a keen interest in family genealogies.  At various points I have made attempts at constructing a family tree for both sides of my family.  I have an aunt and uncle on my mother’s side who have done some extensive work on that side of my family so that was easy work.  My dad’s side, however, has never gone back very far at all.  In fact on my paternal grandfather’s side I have never even known his parents until very recently!  This year, I decided to take another stab it with the thinking that electronic databases were getting more and more information and I had quite a bit more luck.  I used various websites, some of which have the 1940 census available.  I was actually able to find information all the way back to my five-great grandparents!  I got some educated guesses going all the way back two more generations dating back to the mid 1600s but I haven’t been able to confirm these as I have come across some conflicting information.  I am continuing the investigation though and have even considered doing the DNA tests that some web sites offer for a fee.  So far I’ve only used what is available for free, which is actually quite a bit of information.  The data from the 1940 census promises to fill in even more holes, particularly with the family of my paternal grandfather.  It has been a fun exercise and I’ve learned a little bit more about where I came from, even if it’s sometimes just a name.  The new data from the 1940 census gave me some information from my grandparents on both sides that I hadn’t known before.

Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control Kick Off #CrestSponsored

I am very excited to let you know that I am participating in the Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control Test Drive Program.  A clean, healthy mouth is important for confidence, social interaction, and most of all, the health of your body.  At this stage of life I am pretty good at brushing, flossing, and rinsing but I haven’t always been that way.

One of the many reasons I’m so dedicated to my routine is the clean feeling my mouth gets right after I’m finished.  I love it.  It’s really the little things in life that delight me.  Most people dislike going to the dentist but I don’t mind it.  My dental hygienist is super nice and she even reads my blog {Hi, friend!}.  With each visit I get a free toothbrush, tooth paste, & floss in a goody bag.  My favorite part of going to the dentist is how clean my mouth feels right afterwards!  I try to avoid eating for as long as I can so I can enjoy the most of it.

For this test drive program I received a bundle of Crest and Oral-B items that were developed to work together to help keep plaque at bay and make it possible to get that “dentist-clean” feeling at home.  Crest’s new Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control toothpaste not only rids your teeth of plaque but it helps to prevent plaque from forming. Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse is clinical-strength protection against plaque and gingivitis.  I am glad to have found a mouth wash that doesn’t burn my mouth and doesn’t have a strong overpowering taste either.  I love my new Oral-B Clinical Pro-Flex Toothbrush in very soft!  Last but not least, I received a package of Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Clinical Protection Floss.  While I’ll admit that I like the woven floss better this is still one of the best that I’ve tried.  I’ll continue using these products for two weeks and I’ll let you know how it goes!

CouponCodes4U – New Coupon Code Site

CouponCodes4U

We all love saving money, right?  Don’t forget that clipping coupons isn’t the only way to do so.  Being an avid online shopper, I’m always on the lookout for a “Free Shipping” or “30% Off” promotion code to help me save.  Every little bit adds up!

I’ve recently learned about another coupon code site called CouponCodes4U!  One of my favorite features about this site is their Hot Deals section where they list the latest high-value coupon codes.  This is a great section to scan if you’re looking for a gift for someone but don’t know exactly what you want.

Browsing their site I’ve found many of my favorite online stores but I also found a few that I have never heard of before.  For instance, Endless is a shop that sells shoes and accessories for the whole family.  They have some high end brand names but also budget-friendly items too.  Go check it out for yourself but first go and find an Endless coupon code just in case you find something you want!

All in all, CouponCodes4U is an easy to navigate site with hundreds (maybe thousands) of store discount codes.  You can search by store name or product category to find the coupon code that’s just right for you.

If you have a favorite coupon code source I would love to hear about it!

How to Get Wavy Hair

My hair is as straight as a board so I’m always looking for a new way to curl my hair.  It may be because it reminds me of summer but lately, I’ve been in love with the wavy look.  There are about a million different ways to curl your hair to achieve wavy locks but this five-step process has proven to work the best for me.

1. Use a curling iron that gets really hot.

2. Wrap hair around the curling iron and away from your face.  Don’t use the clamp and hold it there for about 15 seconds.

3. Repeat this all over your head using small sections of hair.

4. Spray hair with a shine serum that has a little hold or a light hairspray that adds shine.

5. Scrunch hair to mess it up slightly so your curls look natural and not perfect!

Give it a try and let me know what you think or if you have any wavy hair suggestions please feel free to share them!
