5 iOS Driving Apps for your Family Road Trip

5 Apps to Make Your Family Road Trip More Enjoyable!

If you’ve got a family holiday planned and the thought of trying to get everyone from A to B makes you a little nervous, this guide is perfect for you. There’s a smartphone app for almost everything these days, and driving is no exception! From GPS systems to parking spot finders, these 5 iOS apps, recommended by Passsmart, will help make your journey run much more smoothly, and – you never know – you might even enjoy it!

greenMeter

This handy iPhone app will help you control your heavy right foot, reduce your carbon emissions and save you fuel. The greenMeter app will give you real time, audible descriptions of your driving style in order to warn you when you’re being a little too heavy-footed with the gas and brake pedals. Although most of us have the best of intentions when it comes to being eco-friendly, many of us are guilty of driving in a not-so-eco-friendly way. This app will not only help combat your carbon footprint on your family vacation, but it will also help you to become a more eco-friendly driver in the long run.

The greenMeter iOS is available to buy for $5.99.

Find My Car

Have you ever lost your car in the parking lot? Sounds impossible but we’ve all been there. The Find My Car for iPhone app will help you when you’ve stopped off at the services and have absolutely no idea where you left the car. Using GPS location services, the app takes a note of where you’re parked, reminding you when you reopen it to look for your vehicle.

This handy app is free so it can’t hurt to download it just in case!

Where To?

This iPhone app is perfect for visiting new places with the kids in tow. Where To? will not only give you driving directions but it will also help you decide where to go. Whether it’s a restaurant to dine in, an activity to keep the kids entertained or the nearest medical center, the app will find local options using GPS data. If you can’t settle on a place, you can even use the ‘shake to surprise’ feature which will choose for you – perfect for kids who can’t agree on anything!

The Where To? app is $2.99.

Garmin USA

This satellite navigation app is a little on the pricey side, but it’s great if you’d rather use your iPhone than a separate GPS system. Garmin USA will direct you to your destination and show you real images of complex junctions to help you navigate. There is also an integrated route planner, perfect for family car trips, which will help you find the shortest or most scenic route.

At $49.99 it’s one of the more expensive GPS navigation apps but it has great reviews and you’ll know you’re in good hands with the market leaders, Garmin.

Netflix

If you’re already a Netflix member, the free app will keep the kids entertained in the back whilst you focus on the road ahead. With access to thousands of TV episodes and movies online, it should keep both you and the kids happy. This is a great option if you have an iPad, as it will keep your iPhone free if you need it use it as a GPS navigator.

This app is free to existing Netflix members, but if you aren’t a member you can visit the Netflix website to see if joining is something you’re interested in.

Healthy Home Makeover & $500 Giveaway

Would someone consider me “green?”  I don’t know.  Maybe.  I’m not green for the sake of being green or because it’s trendy.  I actually despise the trendiness of it.  I’m mostly green because I’m frugal.  Plus, since having a baby I’m ever aware of BPA, parabens, and formaldehyde in everyday products.

MightyNest

While researching safe products for my baby and my home I came across MightyNest.  They’re a company that’s dedicated to helping parents create healthy, safe homes by being an online store, resource center, and community of engagement and support, not judgment.  Doesn’t that sound good?  Here’s a little more information from their website:

Founded by two parents, their mission is to give families the ability to research, get advice, and buy high quality, natural, non-toxic everyday products all in one place.

From kitchenware to skin care, MightyNest‘s safety experts have built the web’s broadest selection of products that are free from known toxic ingredients such as BPA, PVC, Phthalates, Lead, Melamine, Formaldehyde, Parabens, and more.

MightyNest seeks to help people feel motivated and empowered to make changes in their lives, whether large or small.

Since my little one was born I’ve been working on replacing old pans that are chipping.  We’ve replaced our old grill where the top of the lid was chipping off and falling in our food.  We’ve also replaced old, old melted plastic containers that were full of nasty toxins.  I’m a sentimental person so it wasn’t always easy getting rid of things that were passed down to me from my family or my husband’s family.  Brand new shiny things helped to ease the separation pain but because of the cost I’m only replacing a little at a time.

I found a giveaway to help me replace more items at a quick rate!  MightyNest is giving away $500 through their Healthy Home Makeover Pin it to win it Challenge.  I’ve started pinning to win already and you can too!

Mighty Nest Pin to Win Giveaway

The giveaway is pretty simple really.  You just repin your favorite items from MightyNest’s “Healthy Home Makeover” board onto your own Healthy Home Makeover board.  There are things for every room in the house and even a good amount of cute baby toys.  Trust me, once you start pinning it will be hard to stop.

That’s it though!  Just pin and you’re in.  For more information go here and check the rules on the specifics.

Bankruptcy Basics

Bankruptcy Basics

Bankruptcy is something no one plans for.  No one thinks it’s a great idea.  Even though people do everything they can to avoid it, sometimes  good people have to resort to bankruptcy.

The fear, guilt and shame that come with bankruptcy are awful and if at all possible I recommend avoiding bankruptcy.  Sometimes it’s hard when you’re drowning in debt to think of ways out.  You’re emotional and your thoughts are consumed with getting out from under the weight that is holding you down.  Perhaps selling your car, taking an extra job (think pizza delivery), having a garage sale, and cutting extra spending each month will be enough to do the trick.  Most would agree that these sacrifices are better than the alternative.

There are two main types of consumer bankruptcy:

  • Chapter 13 which means the court approves a plan for you to repay your debts over time.
  • Chapter 7  which means the court sells your assets in order to pay back as much as possible, with some exemptions that vary state to state, to allow you to keep some personal items and maybe some home equity.

Bankruptcy doesn’t eliminate:

  • Child support
  • Alimony
  • Taxes
  • Student loans

Where to go from here:
If you’re serious about getting out of your financial mess start with the basics.  Don’t look at your expenses and try to cut here and there.  Start with a clean slate.  The basics you need to survive, yes survive, are food, shelter, clothing, utilities, and transportation.  First make sure you have food on the table and utilities.  I’m talking rice and beans not take out pizza.  Then make sure your rent or mortgage payment is up to date.  You already have clothes so make due with those for now.  That takes care of your basic needs now on too everything else.

Sell eeevveeerryyyythhhiiinggg.  Sell your old books, your old CDs, old toys, tools, home decor, anything that you no longer need or that you can replace later once you have your finances in order, sell!  As Dave Ramsey says, “Sell so much the kids think they’re next.”  With the money you get pay a little to each creditor you owe to show them that you are trying.  It’s better to pay your rent/mortgage in full each month than to pay off your credit card.  You need a place to sleep.

There is life after bankruptcy so if you have to go through it you will survive but it’s best to avoid it if at all possible.

Summer Saving Tips: How to Holiday on a Shoestring

How to Holiday on a Shoestring

If you want to get away this summer, but don’t fancy spending a fortune – fear not! There are plenty of ways to vacation (or holiday if you want to sound fancy) on a shoestring, so take a look at these money-saving tips.

Pay with a low interest credit card

These days, many people pay for flights and accommodation electronically – be it online or over the phone. If you do this, however, remember to use a low rate credit card to make the transaction as this will keep your borrowing costs down. You’ll accrue less interest if you fail to pay back the total sum on time and should be able to clear your outgoings quicker.

Shop around for the best deal

With the economy in a fragile situation, a significant number of holiday companies have slashed their prices in a bid for business. There are some pretty great deals out there at the moment, so always shop around for the best offers. Compare hotel prices online, look for low budget packages and see if you can visit your dream destination on the cheap. Of course, if it seems too good to be true it might just be, so read all the terms and conditions before booking.

Fly off peak

If you’re willing to fly off peak, you might be able to get a reduced airfare. Prices tend to drop during unsociable hours, so be as flexible as you can with your travel times. Look for early morning or late night flights if possible and don’t be afraid to book outgoing and return flights with different providers. What’s more, you’re likely to get a better deal during winter, so if you can delay your summer break by a month or two you could make a significant saving.

Think about your commute

Getting to an airport or port is one thing, but paying for the commute is another. Public transport is not always cheap, so think about booking a rail ticket in advance or searching around for the most affordable taxi company. If you have friends or relatives living nearby, ask if they can help or convince your siblings to drive if they have a license. Getting a lift could save you a lot of money and will help you avoid high airport parking fees.

If you’ve not been away for a while, it can be tempting to take out a loan or apply for a credit card in order to fund your trip, but there’s no need to rack up additional debt if you don’t have to.

Vanessa Williams’ Skincare Revitalistic

Vanessa Williams Revitalistic Skincare

I was first given the opportunity to review Vanessa William’s Revitalistic SkinCare set two months ago.  I spent over a month reviewing each of the products because I want to thoroughly review a product before promoting it.  After one week of trying the products, I knew I would love them.  By the end of the month, I was already placing orders for a few of the items with my own money.  This is a great set!

To begin with I was a little skeptical because anytime a celebrity puts their name on something I’m extra critical.  I don’t really know why but that’s how my mind works.  Also, I knew that just because Vanessa Williams is amazingly beautiful that these products aren’t what made her that way and they weren’t going to turn me into the next super model.  I was realistic and even a bit negative to begin with.  These products had to be really tremendous to change my mind and they did!

Vanessa Williams Eye Serum

1.) RE-FOCUS Firming Eye Cream

This is an extremely light-weight, almost runny eye cream.  You can wear it day and night without having to worry about putting too much product on and having your make up cake up.  While I liked that about it I wanted a little something more substantial at night.  I guess I’m just used to the thicker creams.  At night I would follow my skin care regimen as normal, pat the eye cream on, and then dab a little Vaseline over top of it to seal it in for the night.  In the morning my eyes would feel so hydrated.  I loved it!

2.) RE-QUENCH Anti-Age Defense

This is a great product!  I feel bad that I don’t have a picture to show you the texture but the truth is I used it all. I did.  I loved it and it’s definitely one of the products I’ll keep buying.  It’s lightweight but not too light and it moisturized wonderfully.

Vanessa Williams Neck and Decollete Cream

3.) RE-CONTOUR Neck & Decollete Cream

I love a great decollete cream!  I usually use my regular moisturizer over my neck but I use a specialized cream for the area just below my neck, along my collar bone.  This is a thicker cream that feels great on.  I recommend it to everyone because no one wants to have a pretty face and a wrinkly neck.

Vanessa Williams Skincare Skin Serum

4.) RE-START Skin Serum

I have a love/hate relationship with this product.  Serums are great concentrated products that deliver a lot of bang for your buck however, I’ve never seen a serum quite like this before!  It’s a very greasy feeling product which I didn’t enjoy but by the time it was rubbed it into my skin it wasn’t greasy anymore.  It’s like magic!  All in all, I like this product and would probably buy again.

Vanessa Williams Skin Perfecting Peel

5.) PERFEXTURE Triple Enzyme Skin Perfecting Peel

Last but not least, we have PERFEXTURE, the set’s peel.  THIS. IS. AMAZING!  It’s truly a wonderful product.  The directions say to leave it on for three minutes and then wash it off.  I put it on while in the shower because I wanted a way to wash all the little granules off thoroughly without getting any in my eyes and without overflowing the bathroom sink with water.  I may have left it on a little longer than three minutes but when I washed it off my skin felt brand new.  It sloughs off the old dead skin on top leaving smooth skin underneath.  Once I dried off I applied the other products on top to seal in the moisture and keep my skin feeling soft.  I will be stocking up on this product, there’s no doubt about it!

Vanessa Williams Skincare

This set of skin care products has my approval.  If you’d like to try it out for yourself you can buy it right now on QVC for $52 + shipping.

Until next time,

Have a beautiful day!!

Tax Free Savings, How to Get the Best Deal

Which side of the pond saves better, the British or the Americans?  I thought about it and I’m not sure I know who is better saving money!  Maybe some of my UK friends and readers could help fill me in but here’s what I’ve found so far.

Americans have IRAs (Individual Retirement Accounts), and the British equivalent of that is a PPP, (Personal Pension Plan). British also have an Individual Savings Account (ISA) is a tax-efficient way to save or invest.  I’m sure a cash isa in the UK comes in handy.  I think those are all great ways to save for the future!

All British pay into the National Insurance Fund which is a weekly paid as a pension at age 60 so those, too, are very similar and are a way to save for the future.  Americans pay into and eventually collect {or hope to collect in some cases} Social Security.

Many Americans have both checking and savings accounts and utilize both for saving money and a British Current Account is what many use to do this in the UK.

I know that many Americans take advantage of 401-K plans offered by our employers and some times employers will even offer a matching donation.  For instance, if the employee gives up to 5% to their 401-K plan, then their employee will match whatever percent they contributed.  This is definitely something to take advantage of!

A few other money trends that I’ve observed here in America include Extreme Couponing, parents have started saving earlier and earlier to pay for their children’s college, and elderly couples are investing in long term care so that the spouse who lives the longest will be taken care of.  American readers feel free to chime in as well and let me know if I missed anything.

Even though our currency looks different it seems that people on both sides of the pond use many of the same methods to save and spend money. You have to choose the best IRA to suit your needs (or the best isas for my UK readers).  I don’t think it matters where you live, saving money is a smart idea to protect you in the futures.  As an old idiom says, “Save for a rainy day!”  I think that with a bit of discipline and common sense everyone can save money.  What do you think?

Letting Our Light Shine by Donating w/ Champions for Kids #MobilizingMillions #cbias

*This post has been sponsored by Social Fabric and Champions for Kids but all opinions remain my own. Full disclosure is at the bottom of the post.

Let Your Light Shine Banner

My family likes to save where we can so we can donate more.  We don’t donate to every charity out there but we donate too the charities that are closest to our hearts and several that our closest to our homes.  This month is “Missions Month” at our church and I’m priviledged to be able to serve on the missions committee at our church.  Our church believes in supporting local and national missions.  As our pastor frequently says, “The light that shines the farthest shines the brightest at home.”  The missions committee decided that the theme for this month would be “Let your light shine.”  As a way to shine our light we decided to give of our resources to two local charities.  Families are encouraged to bring donations for a local food bank and for a local pregnancy center.  I love both of these ministries and I enjoy shopping for charities.

Champions for Kids

A week or so ago I was contacted with the opportunity to Pack a Sack for Champions For Kids and I jumped at the chance.  Champions For Kids is partnering with Abbot Brand Products to bring nutritional non perishable foods to local food pantries and food banks.  I think it’s neat the way that it worked out because I would be buying food to donate anyway and now I get to promote a great cause and tell you about it.  If I wasn’t part of this campaign I wouldn’t have thought to have told you about my donation but now I can tell you how I donated and encourage you to do the same in your local community.

Being on the missions committee it was my job to help spread the word about this month-long campaign.  We’ve posted fliers, made announcements, added the details to the morning power point slide, and even handed out little key chains reminding people to shine their light.  We have a designated area in the church where people can bring non-perishable donations.

I went shopping at our near-by Walmart for items to donate.  First, I grabbed a few things I wanted to get for our home like Infant Advil (for my sick little one), an adorable mini-golf set (for her birthday coming up), and a new bucket and sponge so I can wash the thick pollen off of my car.  Secondly, I went to the tote section and picked out a medium size tote that I thought would be good to fill with food for the food bank.  Then I went shopping!  If you’re interested you check out my whole Walmart shopping trip.

Similac on Sale

Even when buying for others I’m still thrifty.  When it came to the name brand items that I’m uncompromising on and I buy faithfully for my family I bought those to donate and when I found a store brand item that my family loves I bought it instead of the name brand.   I used coupons, paired them with sales.  I spent as much money as I had budgeted to spend but this way my money went a lot further.

Great Value Snacks

I really want my daughter to learn to be a giver.  I hope to show her example after example of how our family gives to others and is grateful for all we have.  I know it’s never too early to start leading by example but unfortunately my little sweetheart is down with an awful virus.  She wasn’t well enough to go shopping with me and wasn’t well enough to go to church to drop off our items.  Hopefully she’ll feel better soon and she can help us deliver the items to the food bank at the end of the month.

Walmart Checkout

I know money is tight in every home, I know that.  Some of you may have a few hundred to give, others a few dollars, and some truly can’t give anything.  I understand, I’ve been in each of those places at some point in my life.  If you have the money to donate I want to encourage you to give to others less fortunate…especially the children in your neighborhood.
