How to Keep Your Skin Looking Its Best In Natural Ways

Healthy Skin

Skin is one of the most important parts of the body. It is one of the first lines of defense against the elements and pathogens. It contains sweat glands that help regulate the body’s temperature and nerves that send pain signals to warn against danger, such as the pain felt when touching a hot stove, for example. Despite the importance of skin, its care is often neglected. Changes that come from natural aging may not be avoided, but premature aging and skin damage often can be diminished as long as skin is properly cared for.

Keeping Skin Moisturized

Keeping skin hydrated is a very important part of skin care. Maintaining skin’s natural suppleness through hydration keeps skin healthier and youthful-looking longer. Drinking water throughout the day benefits the skin from the inside out. However, some people still suffer from dry skin despite adequate fluid intake, especially on areas that are exposed to the elements, such as the face. Moisturizing body lotion for the body and a moisturizing face cream can prevent the itching and flaky skin associated with dryness.

Protecting Skin from the Elements

Sunlight, temperature extremes, and drying winds can easily damage skin when it is left unprotected. Applying a good sunscreen protects skin from the damaging, aging effects of the sun.

In harsh winter weather, the drying effects of a cold wind can take a toll. The best way to prevent skin damage is to cover exposed areas when possible and to use moisturizing lotions and face cream daily.

Daily Skin Care

One of the first things most people do in the morning is take a bath or shower. This is the time when daily skin care should take a front seat. Cleansing agents should match the skin type and leave skin feeling soft and supple. Facial skin requires the most delicate care because it is the most exposed and is the first thing people notice. A daily, gentle facial scrub removes old skin cells and leaves skin softer and younger looking.

Persons with dry skin should moisturize immediately after showering while skin is still slightly damp –patting the body dry with a towel rather than vigorously rubbing is gentler to the skin. Taking a little extra time in the morning to pamper the skin can help prevent dryness, damage and wrinkles.

Health and Nutrition

A body that receives a long-term diet of healthy food will age more quickly than a body nourished by health foods. Collagen is very important for the health and vibrancy of skin. Diets lacking sufficient quantities of vitamins, such as vitamins A and C, negatively affect collagen and causes skin to be more prone to wrinkles. Eating a balanced diet that is full of fruits and vegetables is one way to slow the aging process naturally.

Alcohol and cigarettes are also foes to attractive healthy skin. Both deplete the body of important vitamins, and both affect capillaries in the skin, leading to less youthful suppleness and more wrinkles.

Childhood Dream Coming True?

Julep spring collectionEver since I was a little girl I have loved nail polish!  From as far back as I can remember I had a fascination with beauty products.  I remember many times my mom would get ready and she would lovingly allow me to set on the counter and ask her a million and one questions about make up colors, tools, and nail polish.

Eyelash curler

I remember the feeling of sheer embarrassment when I passed along some of her information to my aunt only to find out it was wrong.  My mom told me that you set an eyelash curler on your nose to use it.  Looking back now, I can see why my aunt laughed so hard when I gave my explanation and I can also see the reasoning behind my mom not wanting to tell me the correct way to use one.   Even after that embarrassing 4th of July night (yes, I still remember that night well!), I continued to seek beauty advice from the comfort of that counter.  My mom was a wonder!  She could put lipstick on with one hand and without a mirror.  My hero!   In my mom’s make up bag, which I can still picture vividly, she had all of her make up products along with her chipped red handled Revlon blush brush, Elizabeth Arden Red Door perfume, and the most amazing bottle of Revlon nail polish.  The nail polish was extra shimmery but not glittery.  I remember holding it and staring at it’s beauty while my mom and I talked.   I painted my nails with that polish, my mom’s nails, and even my Dad’s when he was sleeping.  : )  I thought it was the prettiest thing I had ever seen!  As the years past I found other colors to love and became pretty good at painting little decorations on my nails.   Somewhere along the line I developed the dream to one day name a nail polish color.  I know it sounds silly but hey, I was a kid.  I’ve always half-jokingly said that naming polish colors would be my dream job.  Then, last month, during a Twitter party with Julep I found my moment, my perfect opportunity to ask if I could name a polish.  I asked and I didn’t receive a response back because seconds after I asked Julep was flooded with requests to name a polish that was this or that color.  I’m sure they didn’t know who it was that originally asked.   Pretty pinkThat brings me to why I’m writing this post.  The smart people behind Julep took my idea that immediately spread like wild fire and turned it into a marketing project.  They’re pretty brilliant if you ask me!  However, now I have to work a little to get to be able to name a nail polish color.  I’ve already made it to the second round and this is where you come in!  I need you to vote for my color and comment on it.  I chose the ever girly hot pink color in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Voting ends this Friday, Sept. 28, 2012.

Here’s how to vote:

  •  Visit Julep on Facebook through this link – http://on.fb.me/QQi0GZ
  • “Like” their Facebook page.
  • “Like” my “Pretty Pink” board.
  •  Leave a comment on my board. I get points for BOTH “likes” and comments!

This is a one time vote that will only take a few seconds of your time.  Thank you for helping make my little silly dream come true! : )

While you’re there, feel free to follow Embracing Beauty on Facebook too.  Oh, and AFTER you vote for me be sure and check out how you can get a Julep box of polishes for only $0.01 shipped!  It’s a legit deal I promise and the polish is amazing!

15 Beauty Uses for Vaseline

15 Beauty Uses for Vaseline

Vaseline is a wonderful product, wouldn’t you agree?  It’s probably the most inexpensive and versatile products out there.  Right up there with the many uses of baking soda!  You might be surprised of all of the things Vaseline can do.  Here’s a list of my favorite 15 uses for Vaseline.

1. It softens dry and cracked elbows.

2.  Rub a little over your perfume places {behind the ear, neck, wrist, etc.} to keep your scent lasting longer.

3. Massage it into your cuticles every night before bed to keep your cuticles soft.

4. For kissably soft lips add a little Vaseline over your favorite lipstick.  You can also mix Vaseline with a drink mix, such as Kool-Aid powder, to make a colored and flavored lip gloss.

5. To avoid spray on tan streaks or dark spots rub Vaseline all over your knees, ankles and hands {any dry spot} to achieve a beautiful no-bake tan.

6. To prevent lipstick smudges just spread a little Vaseline over your teeth and lipstick smudges won’t be a problem!  As a side effect, you’ll also smile a lot more. : )  This is a tip used by beauty pageants contestants and cheerleaders.

7. To tame wild eyebrows, add a little to Vaseline your brows with a clean mascara wand or a clean toothbrush.

8. If you have a bottle that is always difficult to open make it a easier next time by rubbing a little Vaseline along the edges of the bottle under the cap.  This is fantastic on nail polish bottles!

9. In need of a quick shoe shine?  Swipe a little Vaseline over on your shoes and buff gently for a beautiful shine!

10. Vaseline is wonderful for soothing and smoothing skin after shaving.

11. After you carve your Halloween pumpkin, rub Vaseline on the exposed edges to keep your pumpkin from going dry and rotting. {You can see the results of this put to the test in our how to keep a pumpkin from rotting post.  Maybe add it on after the #1 tip?}

12. If you have very sensitive skin, Vaseline will make a perfect make up remover for you. Plus, you’ll have super soft skin the next day!

13. Mix sea salt {or sugar}, Vaseline and a drop or too of your favorite essential oil for an incredible exfoliating scrub.

14. If you have dry hair with split ends add the tiniest amount to the ends of your hair to cover them up until your next haircut.

15. Last but not least… Apply some under your eye shadow for a dramatic glossy effect.

What are some of your favorite uses for Vaseline?
