Legitimate Survey Companies To Sign Up With

computer surveys

Are you looking for something to do to earn a little income on the side?  You won’t get rich taking surveys but they are a nice way to earn a little extra spending money. This is something I enjoyed doing a lot when I was first married and I had a lot of free time on my hands.  While my time is much more limited now I still enjoy taking a few surveys a week.

If you’re looking for legitimate survey companies to sign up with, here are a few to check out:

Pinecone Research (not currently accepting new members):  If you polled my surveying friends they would say that this is their top rated survey site.  They pay $3 for every survey completed and they pay quickly.  While they’re not currently taking new applications I do try to post here every time they are accepting new sign-ups so keep an eye out for that.

Synovate: Is one of the most highly-recommended survey companies. Lori from Moms By Heart says: “Synovate sign up is FREE and you’ll get great paying survey and product testing opportunities each month. This one is famous for frequently giving free full size products! Most recently I’ve tested diapers (got a full pack for FREE), baby lotion and toothpaste (got three tubes!).”  Go here to Synovate to sign up.

Ipsos i-SaySimilar to the way most survey sites operate, you will receive preliminary surveys to see if you qualify for the full surveys.  You earn points for taking the full surveys and you can redeem those points for cash, gift cards or charity donations.  Go here to Ipsos i-Say to sign up.

TolunaWhen you sign up for Toluna, you will receive 500 points to welcome you to the site. When you have earned at least 60,000 points, you may redeem your points for a cash reward. Go here to Toluna to sign up.

MindFieldIs absolutely free to join and most of their surveys will only take between 5 and 15 minutes to complete and they pay anywhere from $1.00-$35.00!  One of my favorite features is that MindField pays you directly through PayPal {if you want} so you’ll get the money you earned in your hand quickly.

My Survey: You earn points for every single survey you take–even those quick qualifiers! This way you’ll never waste time on a survey you don’t qualify. You can redeem your points earned for cash or prizes and every 1000 points equals $10. Go here to My Survey to sign up.

Inbox Dollars: I used Inbox Dollars primarily for the few cents I earned for reading emails. The checks weren’t huge but it only required clicking on a few emails everyday. Go here to Inbox Dollars to sign up.

MyPoints: Here you can earn points for reading emails, taking surveys, and signing up for offers. When I was participated, I took an occasional survey but I mostly just read the emails and clicked on the links to slowly accumulate points. You won’t get rich quickly doing this, but you can earn enough points by reading emails to get free gift cards each year. We bought gas gift cards with the points I earned through MyPoints. Go here to MyPoints to sign up.

SurveySpot: You can earn up to $5 per survey and you can request payout at $5. It’s not hard at all to earn enough to get a check. Go here to SurveySpot to sign up.

MyView: In return for  your opinion, you will earn points which you can exchange for gift cards that you can spend at various online stores like Amazon, Target and more!  Go here to MyView to sign up.

CashCrate: Once you sign up, you can go to their “Daily Survey” tab and earn around $0.50 per survey you take. They usually offer 1-2 daily surveys. Go here to CashCrate to sign up.

Opinion Outpost: Pays in point rewards for every completed survey. You can cash these in for instant win opportunities, sweepstakes, or my favorite – cash. There are also opportunities to test products for free. Go here to Opinion Outpost to sign up.

Survey Head: This site rewards completed surveys with points. Once you’ve accumulated enough points, you can exchange them for cash, online gift certificates, music downloads, and hundreds of other prizes. Or, build up your points for bigger prizes in your Lightspeed Points Account. Go here to Survey Head to sign up.

Valued Opinions: Once you are a registered member, complete the 10 profile surveys in the member’s area. Completing these surveys will increase your chances to participate in additional surveys.  Based on your responses to the profile surveys, you will be emailed survey invitations to the email address you used for registration.  For each completed survey, you will usually earn a credit between $0.50 and $5. Once you’ve earned $20 in credit, you can exchange it for a gift card to spend with one of America’s best loved brands.  Go here to Valued Opinions to sign up.

Beautiful wedge shoe, $129
Gucci-bag, £3,500
Tahitian pearl earrings, $2,160

Baby, it’s cold outside.  But your sweetheart wants to take you out for a much needed date night.  What’s a girl to wear when it’s too cold out to wear strappy sandals with heels or a sexy sleeveless dress?  Plenty.  For starters, the right pair of shoes can make or break an outfit. I love shoes that can go with anything, from capris to skirts. Choose a style you love best – sleek leather wedges, suede boots, peep toes…the sky’s the limit.  Next, play up your look with coordinating accessories.  Choose items that you love!  You could wear a chunky ring, dainty earrings, or a pearl necklace as long as it’s a piece that you adore.

The date night outfit I selected above is my style {although not all the pieces are in my price range} but what’s your style?  Do you prefer casual, elegant, or glamorous?

How to Store Pantry Food & Maximum Shelf Life

Lock & Lock
I’m sure we’re all aware of the benefits of a well-stocked pantry.  It’s essential for menu planning organization, it helps maintain a diet full of real foods, and saves you a lot money by allowing you to stock up on foods when they hit their rock bottom price.  (See our printable price list).

But if food is not stored properly it spoils and loses all value.  That is why it is imperative to know the proper way to store pantry food & maximum shelf life.

The food wasted in the average North American kitchen is enormous.  Way too much food (and money) are being thrown away!  The numbers are shameful.  Is your kitchen contributing to the problem?  If so, I have some suggestions to help you save more and throw away less.

Food spoilage occurs when:

  • Food is low quality and/or damaged when purchased.
  • Food items are old, older, and embarrassingly old!
  • Food is stored incorrectly, allowing for contamination to occur.

What damages food? Air. Heat. Cold. Light. Moisture. Smells. Tiny critters.  Any of these factors could damage your hard-earned food but they can be prevented!

Ever since I discovered my entire stockpile overtaken with mice I have taken no chances with my pantry items.  I kept my overflowing stockpile in our garage.  What was I thinking?  I had two tables stacked on top of one another and a blanket between the two and flowing down the back so they wouldn’t get scratched.  We had dozens of tiny little mice in just about everything.  It was so painful to throw away garbage bags of food.  Thankfully, we have learned our lesson and now keep all food indoors.

I didn’t just stop at bringing food items indoors.  In my home items are rarely left in their initial packaging and great care is taken to store them properly.  I have became a fan of Lock & Lock bins and glass jars for storage.  I don’t consider plastic bags or cardboard boxes effective for long term food storage.  Thankfully we don’t have any rodents in our home but if we did it would be no problem for them to gnaw through cardboard.   All dry ingredients need to live in a hard container like glass, hard plastic or metal and I use a combination of all three.  These containers also help combat against moisture and air.

Here is what I do personally but you may have a different solution that works well for you.

Glass Jars

Most of my dry pantry items are stored in glass jars. So are a lot of fridge and freezer items, for that matter. They are a great option because they are inexpensive, recyclable, and airtight.

Food I store in glass jars: Tea bags, grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, dried herbs, pasta and more.

Plastic Storage Containers

My favorite storage container of choice is Lock & Lock.  They are durable, airtight, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any food item.  Some friends I know prefer Tupperware because they have a lifetime guarantee.  Now, don’t quote me on that!  This is just hearsay from my friends. : )

I label the outside of my containers with a cutout from the original package and cover with scotch tape.  It’s not ultra classy but it gets the job done.

Food I store in Plastic Containers: Flours, sugars, cereal, pasta, chocolate, crackers, bread crumbs, oatmeal, pancake mix, and more.

Tins

Tins are ideal for containing small, easily scattered items like nuts or yeast packets. Tins also offer a dry, dark, and airtight space.  The obvious drawback to tins is that you can’t see what is inside and I rarely use tins for food for this reason.  For me, what’s out of site is out of mind with me and I’m not careful enough to make sure items don’t spoil.

Foods/items I store in tins: Coffee, dried chilies, yeast, gelatin, and more.

Pantry Items to Store in the Freezer

Several foods can be kept in the freezer to extend storage life, especially during the humid months.

  • Flours
  • Nuts
  • Spices – especially ground spices
  • Grains such as wheat germ and flax
  • Seeds – sunflower, sesame, etc
  • Vitamins (I don’t know if the freezer preserves them any better but it’s what my grandma always told me)

I’ve read that ground spices keep their condition and quality best when stored in an airtight container in the freezer.

Food for Thought: Share Your Bounty with Others

When so many people live daily around us with so little, we’re fortunate to have a stocked pantry.  Don’t forget to share your extras with local shelters, food banks, or churches to help feed those in need around you.

Is there anything wasting away in your pantry right now?

Do-It-Yourself: Homemade Lavender Sugar Scrub

DIY Sugar Scrub

Maybe Matilda shows you how to make homemade lavender sugar scrub.  I can’t wait to try this!  I think these would make adorable shower favors or maybe even a wedding favor.

Update:

I’ve received emails that this website link above is no longer working so I’ve written out my own lavender sugar scrub recipe for you. 🙂

What you’ll need:
– mixing bowl and spoon
– 3 cups white sugar
– 1 cup + 2 Tbsp. good quality oil (I used olive oil but you can use any non-smelly oil)
– 10 drops of yummy-scented essential oil per jar (I choose lavender because most people love lavender, right?)
Combine your sugar and oil, mix it well, and divide into separate bowls (if you’re planning to give each one a different scent). Add your essential oil, stir, and divide among your jars.
Voila! Easy peasy!

Thanks, reader Nicole for this great DIY project!

I Have the Sleep Disorder Hypersomnia

sleep disorder hypersomnia

Update: I have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy instead of hypersomnia because I have cataplexy.  The treatment remains the same for both, it’s just a different diagnosis.  This diagnosis came when I switched doctors from a family care doctor to a neurologist.  Thankfully the neurologist suggested I try Ritalin because it has helped me tremendously.  I have less “fog” to sort through in my head and I’m more alert than before.  I wouldn’t say that I’m near normal but this is a great and new normal for me. 🙂  I’ve loved receiving emails and comments from those who have written me.  Even though this is an old post feel free to reach out if you have something to say.  I don’t know anyone locally who relates to the struggles have having a sleep disorder so it’s nice to occasionally chat with those who do!

Revealing myself through blogging is not something that comes easy for me.  Just take a look at my “about me” page, it barely says anything about me!  Sharing my experiences and ideas on this blog can be tricky.  There is a persistent voice in my head that warns me not to reveal too much about my personal life but do allow my readers to see the real me; the real Ashley, through my writing.  Did you catch that?  My name is Ashley…I bet not too many of you even knew that!  This is difficult but in the long run I know it will be worth it so I blog on.

Yesterday, I posted about a coupon for a free trial of the prescription drug Nuvigil.  I want to tell you how the drug Provigil changed my life {Nuvigil is the new name but same active ingredient and made by the same company}.

Like most high school students, I often fell asleep during class and had trouble concentrating on school work.  During my last two years of high school I fell asleep more often and I couldn’t control it.  My dad worked a night shift and drank more coffee than any person I’ve ever met so I tried to follow in his footsteps and up my coffee intake.  I would fall asleep within an hour of drinking a pot of coffee.  Energy drinks, soda, tea, nothing helped.

Okay, I know this will sound freaky but please don’t judge and just bare with me.  I began hallucinating.  I later learned that this happened as my brain started to enter dream sleep but my body was awake. I had awful, horrid hallucinations.  They seemed ridiculously real!  I don’t have the words to describe how miserable and hopeless I felt.  Have you ever seen the movie The Sixth Sense?  That was an every day occurrence for me.  Without going into too much detail I’ll tell you that in my hallucinations I saw dead people, people murdered, and the like.  After months of suffering I told my Mom about it and she would pray with me and for me.  It was nice to have someone to talk to but she didn’t know how to help.  I thought these people in my hallucinations were demons and I was petrified.  I wanted to talk to my pastor but I was too afraid of what he would think of me.  I guess I’ve always struggled with being honest about who I am.  Years later my husband found out that hallucinations were side effects from my sleeping disorder and  only appear when the disorder was developing.

College was difficult but thankfully by that time the hallucinations had stopped.  I tried drinking caffeinated beverages through the day but nothing kept the sleepiness and the lethargy at bay. I would have overslept my alarm if it weren’t for my roommates.

In class I would struggle to stay awake. My dreams would overlap my consciousness and my hand would keep taking notes that later made no sense at all.  I tried vitamins and herbal supplements to no avail.  I would often go back to my dorm and nap for hours, hoping to shake off the feeling of sleepiness. When my schedule allowed I would sleep through my afternoon nap right to the next morning. On my worst day, I slept for 20 hours.

Miraculously, I somehow managed to graduate without fully staying awake through one class lecture!  After college I thought the sleepiness would wear out.  After two weeks of sleeping fourteen hours each night my dad convinced me to go to a sleep specialist.  He had recently gone to the hospital for a sleep study when he was diagnosed with sleep apnea.  After a two-day sleep study the doctors determined that I have idiopathic hypersomnia. I finally had an answer to why I couldn’t stay awake and why I felt as though my brain was running in slow motion. It was a relief to have a name to a problem that had plagued me for so long. Looking back now, I realize I had those symptoms most of my life, but they began to get noticeably worse around the time I turned 15.

In the handful of years since my diagnosis, I’ve learned to live life on medication.  I’m being treated with Provigil and it has been relatively successfully, but there are times when it doesn’t work.  It’s hard to explain to employers, family or friends what to expect on those days, but it is nothing like what you may have seen on TV.

No two sleep disorder experience symptoms exactly the same, but for me two symptoms follow me during the day. The first is a feeling of general fatigue. If you have ever had mono or pulled an all-nighter, then you have an idea of what this feels like.  It never leaves, ever.  It is like seeing everything through a fog.  Usually by the time I have figured out what someone said and processed my response, the conversation has moved on. It’s as if my body, and particularly my mind, is running in slow motion while the rest of the world is running at normal speed. The second symptom, and the part that most people are more familiar with is the sleeping spells. Unlike what you’ve seen on TV or in movies, I haven’t fallen asleep in the middle of a conversation or while walking, but I have fallen asleep in meetings and while standing.

I begin hallucinating as my brain starts to enter dream sleep, but my body remains awake.  I see things that aren’t happening and my thoughts become a tangled mess.  Though I’ve fallen over a few times generally my body stays put.  I get this irresistible urge to sleep!  I can remember driving down the road and wishing I would quit fighting sleep, lose control, and crash into the guard rail all so I could finally shut my eyes and sleep.

While taking medication, my days without the spontaneous sleeping spells outnumber my days with them.  Without medication it is unsafe to drive and I am largely unable to function normally.  I couldn’t do what I do without my prescription Progivil and I am very thankful for it!

I’m telling everyone about my story in case there is someone out there struggling with daytime sleepiness on a regular basis.  There is hope out there.  Medicine won’t cure a neurological sleeping disorder but it will vastly improve your quality of life.  If you’re suffering to stay awake every day, make an appointment and talk to your doctor.  You’ll be glad you did!

Protect Your Skin This Winter

Dry Skin

Winter can be a harsh time for your skin, with central heating, hair dryers, cold air and nippy winds all causing damage. While cold temperatures and strong winds can leave your skin feeling dry and chapped, turning the heating up is no solution. Spending a lot of time in centrally heated spaces will cause further dehydration of the skin. Worse still, moving between very cold and very warm temperatures – such as entering a heated building after a long walk in the cold – can cause further irritation.

While it can be difficult to fit a thorough skin-care routine into your everyday life, if you have enough time to spare why not spend a few hours giving your skin a little TLC? Apply a face mask, use one of a suitable brand of waxing kits, follow it up with a high quality moisturiser and give yourself and your skin a much-needed break.

Alternatively, by following an efficient skincare routine, you can easily minimise the negative effects that winter has on your skin, keeping you looking fresh and healthy throughout the party season and right up to spring.

One of the simplest, cheapest, most effective and most frequently overlooked ways to protect your skin throughout the winter is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is just as important in winter as it is during the summer, although it can be more difficult to remember to do so. Try to keep a bottle of water close to hand at all times, to drink from while you work or relax. Deciding on how many bottles you need to get through each day in order to keep hydrated will give you an easy objective to keep in mind. You can also top up your water intake by drinking herbal teas, which will warm you up without the dehydrating effects of caffeinated hot drinks such as coffee or tea. It is also important to use a good moisturiser on both your hands and your face to keep them feeling smooth. Use a skin cream or primer underneath your foundation to keep your skin moisturised throughout the day.

Drinking fruit juices or eating fruit and vegetables that contain a high percentage of water will not only make it easier to keep hydrated, but will also keep you healthy and protect you from colds, which can leave your skin looking even worse. Colds and ‘flu can cause redness, inflammation, acne and cold sores. While the first three of these are easier to disguise using concealer and foundation, cold sores are more difficult to treat and can be irritating or painful. Wearing good-quality lip balm and making sure you get plenty of vitamins A, C and E will reduce your chances of developing cold sores, while acyclovir cream should help to reduce their effect in the event that you feel one developing.

Sleep is another important, yet frequently forgotten, essential to help protect your skin through the winter. While this is, of course, true all year round – dark circles and a haggard face is never an attractive look – it is especially true during the winter. Not only does the festive season bring with it the party time of year, but our increased dependence on harsh, artificial lighting during the winter months makes it even harder to disguise how little sleep you managed to grab the night before! Try to get at least eight hours’ sleep for at least four or five nights each week to keep your skin looking fresh and radiant.

Revive Dry Skin with Microdermabrasion at Home

Winter weather often translates to dull, dry skin that loses its luster. This can make us look tired, older, and just not as healthy as we typically do. Thankfully, there are a ton of new products and treatments that come to our rescue! There’s always the spa, of course, but that can become costly – on top of requiring an appointment and taking time out of your already busy day. So rather than carve out time for a spa session, why not give some at-home treatments a whirl?

microdermabrasion

You’re probably familiar with the various masques and exfoliating creams on the market, but for something that really gets the job done, you might want to try a microdermabrasion at home kit. These innovative kits typically come with an exfoliating wand, creams, cleansers, and more. For example, the DermaWand RHF Skin System, available at online retailers like ShopNBC, comes with all of the above plus an instructional DVD to ensure you’re performing the procedure correctly. Once you get started, you may notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, shrinking of pores, and all the other great benefits of serious exfoliation. Microdermabrasion sloughs off your dull, dry skin to reveal fresher, younger skin below. It’s also thought to diminish the appearance of acne scars.

So instead of trudging to the spa or putting up with less-than-stellar skin, consider microdermabrasion at home to get glowing on a budget.
