7 Tips to Manage Holiday Stress

‘Tis the season to be merry…… and stressed!   Sometimes the holidays can make us feel more tangled up than the lights on the Christmas tree, but holiday stress does not have to be our fate.

For those who aren’t fans of the Christmas season, the hustle, bustle and emotional rustle this time of year brings can elicit some overwhelming feelings, including irritability, loneliness, the blues, and even depression.

For those who love the holiday season, those same feelings can still secretly weave themselves into our spirits, as busyness, shopping, planning, wrapping, cooking, family challenges, and unmet expectations take their toll on our hearts.

The holidays often bring on this flood of heightened emotions which varies in intensity from person to person, and often results in dangerous stress levels.  In the same way that stress from every day trials can be detrimental to our health, holiday stress – even if only for a couple months – can threaten to inflict the same harm.

Last year the APA reported that nearly all women in the US experience such heightened stress during the holidays that their health is put at risk, and that 41% of women use food, and 28% of women use alcohol, to curb the pain of their holiday stress. These statistics are alarming and heartbreaking and serve to remind us that holiday stress is not something to be ignored.

Fortunately, we can be proactive in preventing the negative impact of holiday stress by following a few simple suggestions and intentionally making Christ the focal point of all we do this season.  Below are 7 strategies to keep in mind to avoid letting holiday stress steal your joy, squelch your Christmas spirit, or damage your health.

     1. Plan for your stress.

You are probably well aware of the holiday stressors that push you to the limit, so why wait until they happen again to try to figure out how to handle them?  For example, if decorating makes you stressed, invite friends or family members to help out and host a decorating party with light snacks and beverages.  If baking goods for the PTA bake sale makes you feel burdened and stressed every year, give yourself permission to sit out this year out. If a family function is always challenging, pray for God’s divine intervention in dealing with family conflict this year.  Being proactive in making plans for dealing with common holiday stressors is a great stress reducer.

     2. Pursue a positive attitude.

Whether the holidays are our favorite time of year or not, we still need to pursue a loving, Godly attitude in the midst of the chaos. If we let crowds and traffic put us in a bad mood, we’ll take it out on our family later. If we allow obligations to stretch us thin, we’ll be too busy to enjoy the season. If we focus on all the negative aspects the holidays may bring, we will lose sight of the fact that we are really celebrating the birth of Jesus. Our attitudes and our thoughts will carry us to a destination of a joy, or a destination of bitterness and grumpiness.  If you struggle with a Grinch attitude every year, ask God to help you pursue a new attitude for this season, and experience real joy in Christ.

     3. Purposely get enough sleep.

If you want to be able to stay in a good mood during the holidays, don’t forget to rest! Sleep deprivation has a serious negative impact on our moods and our ability to manage even small levels of stress. Commit to getting to bed at a decent hour and getting a good night’s rest as often as possible.

     4. Party sensibly.

Even though being at every holiday party we are invited to makes us feel and look like social butterflies, all that party-going might leave us bound up in a cocoon of stress.  Choose your social events selectively, and only attend those which are most important to you.  Stand in front of a mirror and rehearse a gentle and polite response to share when someone invites you to a function that you know will not fit into your schedule

     5. Prepare a routine for the month of December.

Think about all the things you usually have to do around the holidays, jot them down on a list, and set a daily schedule for each day in December for fulfilling them, while being sure to include a target deadline for each thing. Write out your gift list, gift suggestions, budget, social outings, travel or packing needs, shopping availability, babysitting needs, special events you cook for, grocery lists, etc. This might sound compulsively organized, but it will be time and effort well spent, because good planning sets the stage for peace.

     6. Practice fun. The holidays are supposed to meaningful and fun, so why do we let busyness and chaos steal the joy and fun from our hearts?  Think about some ways you can have fun with your family or friends this year and make a commitment to follow through with them. Keep in mind that sometimes the best entertainment is cost effective, like watching movies at home or riding around looking at holiday lights and decor.

  1. Promote love.

Our inward thoughts will always drive our outward actions, so if we want to show love during the holidays to family, friends and total strangers, we first have to focus on feeling God’s love. Although every person faces different adversities in life, we can all enjoy the Christmas season if we remember that Christmas is really about celebrating God’s love for us. If we bicker and complain our way through the season, our holiday spirit will exit quicker than Santa up the chimney. But if we focus on the fact that we are supposed to be celebrating peace, joy, and love, our Christmas spirit, our faith, and our love for others will soar. When our hearts are full of love, it’s hard to be a Grinch.

Unfortunately, Christmas can leave us feeling as tattered as the ripped up wrapping paper strewn around a living room floor on Christmas morning. A little holiday stress preparation can be the determining factor in whether your holiday is joy-full or stress-full, and when our hearts at peace our holidays can be too.

Wedgwood, Waterford, & Royal Doulton Christmas Ornaments

This post was created in partnership with eAccountable. As always, all opinions are my own.

I’ve been a fan of Wedgwood’s classic look for as long as I can remember.  I’ve never owned many pieces but I always admired them at others’ homes.

Waterford crystal is gorgeous and I’m lucky enough to own a small Waterford piece that I bought in Ireland.

My mom is a little obsessed with British comedies and because of her I’ve watched my share of the TV show Keeping Up Appearances.  On that show there is a character named Hyacinth Bucket {pronounced “bouquet”} who obsesses over her Royal Doulton fine china.  Ever since I first watched that show years ago I’ve wanted a little piece of Royal Doulton for myself.  I still don’t own any but maybe for Christmas this year I’ll buy myself one of the Royal Doulton Christmas tea cup ornaments.

Today, I was browsing through the Wedgwood, Waterford, and Royal Doulton sites while looking for sale items and I fell in love with a number of their Christmas ornaments.  I couldn’t help but share them with you in case you want to snag a discounted ornament for yourself, co-worker, or loved one.

Wedgwood Christmas Ornaments

The beautiful Wedgwood ornaments are on sale from $19.95-$29.95 (originally $29-$43).  Check out all the cute Wedgwood ornaments for yourself.

Waterford Christmas Ornaments

These Waterford Crystal ornaments are probably gorgeous in person and will hold their beauty for generations if taken care of properly.  Unfortunately, there aren’t any on sale right now.  They range from $55-$85 a piece but some can be custom engraved for no extra charge.  Check out Waterford’s Christmas ornaments for yourself.

Royal Doulton Christmas Ornaments

I think these Royal Doulton ornaments are just lovely and I’m trying to decide between the tea pot and the tea cup {or both!}.  The single ornaments are on sale for $14.99 (from $21.50 retail) and the sets of three are on sale for $39.99 (from $58).  Check out all of the Royal Doulton Christmas ornaments for yourself.

What’s your favorite Christmas ornament?

KidKraft Cookie Baking Set Review

KidKraft Cookie Baking Set

Last Christmas, I wrote about how I searched and searched to find my daughter the perfect play kitchen and how I ended up with a KidKraft kitchen. {See my KidKraft Kitchen Review here}  When the good people at KidKraft saw my post they wrote me an email to tell me how much the liked my thorough review and they asked for my address so that they could send me a KidKraft Baking Set for free – no strings attached.  Of course I said yes and my daughter has happily played with it for months now.  She loves it and I love that it’s made with the same KidKraft quality that I’ve came to expect.

Since Christmas is just around the corner I wanted to share my review of this baking set with you in case that you or someone you know is considering buying a set for the special child in your life.

KidKraft Baking Set

I’ll start with this stock photo from KidKraft.  This set comes with a mixer, removable bowl, two cookies, cookie tray, a working rolling pin, and a spoon for stirring.  Every piece is made with wood and covered with some sort of durable paint.  After months of wear there isn’t one little bit of paint that has chipped.  That’s pretty impressive!

KidKraft Play Cookies

My daughter loves to set her table and serve her little stuffed friends.  Here is a picture of a table that she set herself.  I know what you’re thinking…either that I taught her well or that she is OCD.  ha!  It may be a little of both.

KidKraft Cookies

Here’s an up close look at the cookies to give you a better idea of what they look like.  They have some weight to them without being too heavy.

Kid's Mixer

The mixer moves up and down with ease.  It’s made well so that little fingers won’t get pinched when playing.

Kids's Wooden Mixer

Here’s a look at the mixer when it’s in the down position.  You can see that there is a gap between the beater bars and the bowl.  That’s nice for two reasons. 1.) It won’t scratch the bowl. 2.) Little hands can easily remove the bowl without having to lift the top of the mixer.

KidKraft Mixer

From this angle you can see how it fits perfectly on the counter space available and it even leaves some room for additional food prep.  You can also see the circular logo in the side of the mixer.  If I had my way it wouldn’t be there but it’s certainly not a deal breaker.

KidKraft Kitchen Accessories

Here’s an example of that free counter space being put to good use.  The lovely hand towel was made by my sweet sister-in-law who also made a matching dish towel too.

KidKraft Kitchen

Here’s a look at my daughter baking her KidKraft cookies.

Okay, it’s time for a quick review.

  1. All pieces are made with wood so I know they’ll last.
  2. After months of use the paint is still in perfect condition.
  3. The mixer is made well so it won’t pinch tiny fingers.
  4. No annoying noises or batteries to replace.
  5. Working rolling pin and liftable mixer {yes, I made up the word liftable}.
  6. Fits well on our KidKraft kitchen, it matches it, and looks nice setting out.
  7. The bowl can be removed easily and used as a salad bowl or fruit bowl, etc.

Tiny Con:

  1. I’m not a fan of the logo on the side of the mixer.

All in all, my daughter and I both love this set and would recommend it to any little chef.  If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

This KidKraft Baking Set is on sale right now at Target for $23.49 but prices are always fluctuating so double check before you buy.

December Photo a Day 2012 – Days 6-13

I’ve been a little behind on posting my photo a day photos but I’m here to catch up!  I’ve been posting them on Twitter and Instagram but just not my blog.  Without further ado…

Day 6 – Toys This is a picture of my husband breaking down and removing the batteries from an old toy so that we could make room for new Christmas toys.

Christmas Lights

Day 7 – Bright This is a strand of VERY bright LED lights.  I’m not a fan.

The Money Saving Mom's Budget

Day 8 – Good Book This is a picture of one of the latest drafts of Crystal Paine’s book, The Money Saving Mom’s Budget, that she sent me before it was published.  It’s a great book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for practical ways to save money!

A Beautiful Sight

Day 9 – A Beautiful Sight This is my little sweetheart and I think she’s beautiful!

Christmas Tree

Day 10 – Christmas Tree This is the sad picture of my Christmas tree with LED lights in the middle of it.  One of our strands of lights bit the dust this year and apparently very few people still sell regular old glass light bulbs.  These plastic bulbs are dull looking up close while being blindingly bright and many are sharp to the touch.  I am very disappointed.  Oh, and to make things worse, our very bottom strand of lights just died tonight too so now we’ll have to buy more LED lights unless we buy the old fashioned lights online and those won’t arrive until after Christmas.  I can’t decide what to do.  Remove all the lights and put them back on more sparingly, buy a large LED strand, buy old lights online and pay an outrageous amount for quick shipping, or buy several 2 feet strands of the old lights for $5 a box at the only place we’ve found them at in town.  Decisions, decisions!

Day 11 – Something Yummy

This is amazing!  It tastes so much better than my poor pictures shows.  This is a Moravian Sugar Cake which I was recently introduced to.  It’s ridiculously good!  If I find a recipes for it I’ll be sure to share it with you.

Julep Nail Polish

Day 12 – Sparkle

This sparkly bundle of nail polish is from Julep.  I’ve enjoyed just about every bottle I’ve got from them but their glitter is out of this world.  It brings out the child in me for sure!!! They have full coverage glitter, medium coverage and get this, glitter with different size sparkles!  Yea, I’m hooked.

Someone I love

Day 13 – Someone I Love

Of course I was going to take a picture of my family!  It was between my daughter and my husband and my daughter was the only one home at the moment.  If you’re reading this, I love you too, Michael!!

In case you haven’t heard what all this Photo a Day talk is about, you can go here to December Photo a Day for all the information.  The basic gist is that everyday throughout the month of December we’re given a specific theme to take a picture of.  I’ll be taking a picture with Instagram and I’ll share my picture here on my blog.  I also have a linky attached to the main post so you can link up your photo of the day that you’ve published on your blog.  Plus, if you want to participate but don’t have a blog you can use the hashtag #EmbracingDecember to share on Twitter or Instagram!  I hope you’ll join us!
