MedImmune RSV & Preemie Awareness #protectpreemies #rsv

preemie awareness day

Did you know that children are susceptible to RSV even at the age of 2 years old?  RSV (Respiratory Syntactical Virus) can be a deadly virus.  It typically shows up with minor symptoms in most babies but in high-risk babies it can quickly become an infection that is very difficult for their little bodies to fight.

I am so blessed to have gone through a full-term pregnancy and to have a healthy little girl.  Some of my friends haven’t been so fortunate.  I know many friends who have had premature babies and a few of them had babies who got RSV.  They have had to leave their baby in the hospital for a couple of months while the babies got the care they needed.  Even after they were allowed to bring their babies home it was a while before they were considered “healthy” again.  It’s heart breaking to see such a little one struggle with the virus.

It’s scary to think that my daughter isn’t out of the woods yet.  She’s not 2 years old yet and I’m very cautious about what she’s allowed to touch and who she’s allowed to be around.  It’s a constant struggle for me to find balance between being over protective and being cautious.  I choose to err on the side of caution.  Check out a few tips from MedImmune on how to keep your baby healthy.

Here is an infographic about RSV:

RSV Quick Facts:

  • RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalization, and severe RSV disease causes up to 10 times as many infant deaths each year as the flu.
  • RSV is most prevalent during the winter months. The CDC has defined the “RSV season” as beginning in November and lasting through March for most parts of North America.
  • In addition to prematurity, common risk factors include low birth weight, certain lung or heart diseases, a family history of asthma and frequent contact with other children.

Prevention is Key:
RSV is very contagious and can be spread easily through touching, sneezing and coughing. Since there’s no treatment for RSV, parents should take the following preventive steps to help protect their child:

  • Wash hands, toys, bedding, and play areas frequently.
  • Ensure you, your family, and any visitors in your home wash their hands or use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid large crowds and people who are or have been sick.
  • Never let anyone smoke near your baby.
  • Speak with your child’s doctor if he or she may be at high risk for RSV, as a preventive therapy may be available.

Symptoms:

  • Know the symptoms of RSV and contact your child’s pediatrician immediately if your child exhibits any of these symptoms:
  • Severe coughing, wheezing or rapid gasping breaths .
  • Blue color on the lips, mouth or under the fingernails.
  • High fever and extreme fatigue.

What makes RSV so dangerous is that the symptoms are similar to those of a mild to moderate cold.  RSV is easy for any baby to catch so it’s important for all parents to be educated on the dangers of RSV.  It can be transmitted by coughing, sneezing, and simply touching.

If you’re interested in learning more about RSV Awareness {and I recommend that you do!}, you can visit RSVProtection.com.  There, you can find ways to bring up  the subject of RSV up with your doctor, personal stories from real parents, and most importantly, find out when the RSV season is in your part of the country.

Homemade Twinkie Recipe

Twinkies I’m sure that by now you’ve all heard the sad, sad news of Hostess officially closing their doors.  Someone will probably buy the name and recipe and continue on but until they do you can either buy them on Amazon for $75 a box or make your own.  I hope you’ll try this Homemade Twinkie Recipe that I adapted from an old recipe I found.  I think it’s pretty great and you can pronounce every single ingredient inside!   You will need to get yourself a Wilton Mini Loaf Pan or a Twinkie Shaped Pan if you don’t already have one.

Homemade Twinkies recipe

Recipe adapted from TLC, which was adapted from Hey, that tastes good!

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup Canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

For the filling:

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup light cream
  • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar & a little extra

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease three mini loaf pans, six cupcakes, or 6 spots in the Twinkie pan with cooking spray.
  2. Beat the eggs and sugar with a handheld mixer until thick. Slowly add in the other ingredients and beat until fully combined. Divide the batter among your pan of choice and fill it till it’s about 3/4s full.  Bake cakes for 30-60 minutes until outside is a nice golden brown.  Once pan cools transfer to a wire cooling rack.
  3. Prepare the filling by mixing the shortening, sugar, vanilla and light cream with a hand mixer.  Once combined, slowly add in sugar and beat until combined.  Add a little extra confectioner’s sugar to get the right consistency.  Fill a pastry bag (or a baggie) with frosting and cut a small hole in the end.
  4. After the cakes have completely cooled carefully poke holes in the bottom of the cakes and pipe frosting in.  The cupcakes only need one hole, however, the Twinkie loaf or mini loafs may take two or three holes to fill it properly.  Enjoy!

If you want to print this recipe just click on the green “Print Friendly” button below.   I’m pretty excited about this recipe and I like it but if you would rather try a recipe from  Hostess’ The Twinkie Cookbook, you can also buy that on Amazon.  Let me know how you like the recipe!!

College Students Collecting Food Stamps?

College Students Collecting Food Stamps

I’ve always heard that you should, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a college student.”  Everyone knows that college students barely make it by living on ramen noodles and easy mac, and sitting on ikea furniture (although there is nothing wrong with that!).  As a society we’ve offered them special discounts but we’ve never considered that group that group “in need.”  After all, they’re the ones choosing to temporarily sacrifice for the pursuit of a higher education, right?  Maybe not.

This year we’ve seen a startling rise in the number of college students on food stamps or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) as it’s now called.   Sydney Phillips , a student of The College Conservative, even blogged about how she got food stamps and you can too.  She says,

“Welfare in America was intended to provide a temporary means of survival for those at rock bottom.  However, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people using food stamps over the past 40 years, and it would be hard to argue that they are all that destitute.  Over that same time period, an estimated $753 million per year has been spent fraudulently by welfare recipients.  Moreover, the government’s own accounting has cost taxpayers billions of dollars per year as food stamp programs routinely overpay their recipients; last year, that figure alone totaled $2.5 billion.”

Although she admits that there is fraudulence in the system she attests that there is a need for students on food stamps. “The students I know who use food stamps are hard-working, productive individuals whose parents won’t compensate them for the costs of college,” she said in the post. “By using the program, students are able to save hundreds of dollars on food so they can pay for school instead of taking out an extra loan.  I’m not discrediting that logic; I totally sympathize.”

Many people have strong opinions on the topic of federal assistance and with the news that college students are among the rising number of Americans relying on this assistance, some are outraged.  The thought is that students might abuse the program as a way to save money and not because of an actual need.  I suspect we’ll see states cracking down and limiting eligibility requirements or strengthening their method of verification.

What do you think about the enormous rise in college students using food stamps? Are people just trying to get by or do you think many are taking advantage of the system?
