12 Bible Verses About the Birth of Jesus

12 Bible Verses About the Birth of Jesus

Christmas time is always a special time for most everyone worldwide but it should be especially so for those who have trusted Jesus as their Savior.  Christmas is celebrated in many different ways. Some families celebrate traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. It’s possible that not everyone participating in these traditions even understands them and why they are celebrated.  One such tradition practiced by many is the Advent Season.  If you’ve been on Pinterest this month I can almost guarantee that you’ve seen at least one homemade Advent calendar.  But what does “Advent” really mean anyway? The word “advent” comes from the Latin “adventus” meaning “arrival” or “coming,” particularly of something having great importance. The coming of Jesus Christ to earth was the most significant historical event that has ever occurred.  The “arrival” of the promised Messiah has changed the world forever.  It’s my hope that you’ll read the following verses and journey with me as we see Old Testament prophecies of Jesus Christ and then we will see some the New Testament verses that will describe how the Creator of Heaven and Earth came, ever so humbly, to be born in a feeding trough so that He may eventually die for the sins of this world.  For your sins and for mine.

Old Testament Verses About Jesus

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 53:3-7 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

Born of a Virgin
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Born of the House of David
Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Born in Bethlehem
Micah 5:2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

New Testament Verses About the Birth of Christ

Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Luke 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

The Visit of the Shepherds
Luke 2:15-20 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The Visit of the Wise Men
Matthew 2:1-12 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Mary Visits Elizabeth
Luke 1:39-45 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Mary’s Song
Luke 1:46-55 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

Verses About the Birth of Jesus
John 1:9-14 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Technically, this last passage makes 13 but I love it so much that I had to include it.  Think of it as a bonus verse!

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, The innkeeper had no room for Jesus. Do you have room in your busy life to let Jesus in. He came to this earth to be crucified so that you and I may one day live with Him in heaven. Will you come to Jesus? If not, why not? Maybe today is the day that God is knocking on the door of your heart. Have you any room for Jesus?

12 Great Bible Verses To Memorize

12 Great Bible Verses to Memorize

Knowing God, so we can exalt Him, is the ultimate purpose of life. Memorizing the Bible is a great way to get to know Him and what He has planned for our life. These are 12 of my favorite Bible verses and I think they’re 12 Great Bible Verses to Memorize. These verses are from the King James Version, which is my favorite one to memorize from, but feel free to use your version of choice.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Philippians 3:7-8 “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.”

Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Philippians 1:21 “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

It’s been pointed out to me that I left off a very important verse!  I didn’t originally include it because I assumed that most people were already familiar with it but I guess it really is one that you can’t be too familiar with.  Here’s a bonus verse to memorize if you haven’t already and one to reflect on if you have, John 3:16.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Counting Blessings!

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of to-do lists, lights, and tinsel and miss out on the real blessing of Christmas.  Parents focus on buying gifts, wrapping presents, and attending parties.  Kids can focus on the exciting gifts they’re going to get.  I know I can get caught up in making a Pinterest perfect Christmas.  You know?  A gorgeous Christmas card I wouldn’t mind sending the President, a tree that belongs in a storefront window, Christmas cookies that are so perfect they’ll earn thousands of repins on Pinterest, and beautifully wrapped, perfectly chosen Christmas gifts that will make their recipients squeal with joy.  I’m not standing on a pedestal by any means.  I can get caught up in the whirlwind just as much as the next person.  It’s very possible for Christmas to come and go without everyone realizing just how much we already have.  The enormous amount of blessings we’ve already received and the real reason for celebrating in the first place.  This time of year, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, it’s the perfect opportunity for kids to experience the joy and blessings that comes from sharing the unconditional love of Christ, through giving to and selflessly serving other.

Here are a few simple ideas I’ve came up with to bless others:

  • Donate can goods to a local food pantry
  • Donate new toys in your gift drawer or closet to Toys for Tots
  • Make and deliver a meal to a grieving family or a family with a sick loved one
  • Donate a couple of hours of free babysitting for new parents
  • Rake up the leaves in an elderly friend’s house
  • Clean out your closets to donate to GoodWill or the Salvation Army
  • Give few more dollars in the plate at church
  • Prepare a gift for those new to the neighborhood
  • Send a letter and a box of non-perishable goodies to a soldier
  • Have the kids make and mail cards to missionaries
  • Put together a shoebox (or more) for Operation Christmas Child

Mercy recognizes the stress that we allow ourselves to be put under during this season that is meant to be full of joy.  They want to remind us that ‘Our greatest blessing is to see others blessed.’ Let’s take a moment to count our blessings together here and later visit www.ourblessingscount.com to share how you’ve been blessed with others!

I would love to hear the ways that you consciously choose to bless your family by allowing them to give and serve others.  If you have any suggestions for raising grateful, giving children I would love to hear them!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Mercy. The opinions and text are all mine.
