Home Depot Free Kids Workshop: Message Center

Home Depot will be hosting another free Kids Workshop Saturday, August 1st from 9 a.m. to noon. Kids and their parents will be able to make a free message center for your home. —->

The workshops are geared toward children ages 5-12. The goal of these workshops is to teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety while building confidence.

Each child will receive a free project kit, kid-sized orange apron, and an achievement pin.

Kelly Rip and Elecrolux have teamed up with the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund to help raise funds and awareness.

Go to electroluxappliances.com, to get “Cool For A Cause” to design and start selling lemonade from your own virtual lemonade stand. You can even pick what types of lemonade you want to sell like Rosemary Watermelon Lemonade, Raspberry Mint or Citrus Twist, just to name a few.

For every stand opened, Electrolux will donate $1 to OCRF as part of its $500,000 commitment to help fight ovarian cancer.

In addition, you can raise more money by selling the virtual lemonade in your stand. After you create your stand, you will get a link that goes directly to your page and you can send that to all your friends and family asking them to donate to this special cause. 100% of the proceeds will go to OCRF.

Once you open your lemonade stand (and everyday you log in and visit your stand) you’ll be entered for a chance to win a new French Door Refrigerator with a Perfect Temp Drawer™ from Electrolux. When people visit your stand, they will also have a chance to win.

About the owner (in her own words):

“My name is Marnie (named after the Hitchcock film), and I live in lovely Shorewood, Minnesota, just west of the Twin Cities. Before joining Etsy, I taught high school English for eight years.

I have enjoyed working with my hands since I was just a squirt. My “crafting area” grew from a decorated cardboard box to my own craft room. Now I have two squirts of my own, a corner of the basement overflowing with crafty supplies, and a patient hubby who lets me make things.

About the shop:

Choosing a name for my shop was like choosing an image for a tattoo — I wanted it to be meaningful, easily recognizable, and something that represented what I do. Since I have a pull towards all things crafty, I created a name that alludes to multiple media, purpose, and price. In a nutshell, I hope to create items that appeal to a diverse group of people who share one common trait: the appreciation of handmade works.

I’ve started with my most familiar territory: paper. I like to fold it, cut it, and share it. In the near future, I hope to also offer fabric pieces and sketches as well.

Some of my favorite “things” include: trees, the color blue, being “green,” retired racing greyhounds, comfortable shoes, Ted Kooser poetry, hanging clothes on the line outside, and singing in the car.”

She collects the scraps from her work and sends them to Kendra at GreenPost.etsy.com. Kendra then works her magic on those scraps to turn them into functional and beautiful recycled paper, paper pulp magnets, brooches and buttons, and plantable cards and tags with embedded flower seeds. Some of those plantable cards are sent back to Marnie and she will send them out as thank-yous with every order from her shop.

Grand Central has become Google Voice and is getting ready to accept new accounts. Invitations are beginning to be issued, although it seems that there is a wait list. This is a great free service that is worth the wait in my book!
