Get Moving with Best Buy & Shine Elegant Wearable Tracker

Disclosure: The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.

Shine by Misfit elegant wearable trackerNot everyone is naturally drawn to yoga, to exercise, or even to movement.  For most of us, it takes continual motivation to stay active.  That motivation may be to remain in shape, to stay healthy so we’ll live longer, or just to have enough energy to chase after our young kids.

If you find yourself with a sedentary job like I do, you may want to get in a few extra movements in each day to just maintain your current weight.  But what’s a good, simple, and inexpensive way to exercise?  What about walking?  It seems simple enough and it’s free!

Heart.org has some wonderful inspiration to get people walking.  Check out all the benefits walking has to offer:

It’s Easy

  • – Walking is the simplest way to start and continue a fitness journey.
  • – Walking costs nothing to get started.
  • – Walking has the lowest dropout rate of any type of exercise.
  • – Walking is easy and safe.

It Works

  • – Studies show that for every hour of walking, life expectancy may increase by two hours.
  • – Walking for as few as 30 minutes a day provides heart health benefits.
  • – Walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health.

It Pays

  • – Physically active people save $500 a year in healthcare costs.
  • – Employers can save $16 for every $1 they spend on health and wellness.
  • – Fitness programs have reduced employer healthcare costs by 20 – 55%.
  • – Reducing just one health risk in the workplace increases productivity by 9%.
  • – Reducing one health risk decreases absenteeism by 2%.

Many of my friends walk daily and enjoy that quiet time alone or the bonding time with their families.  Several of them have encouraged me to take up this hobby explaining how good it makes them feel physically and how that time out of the house helps clear their head.  While I don’t always want to do the work, a clear head and feeling better about myself physically sound like a great reason to get out and walk.

Shine Tracker

I’ve asked my walking friends if they used a pedometer to keep track of how far they’re walking each day and one friend told me about an incredible little gadget she picked up at Best Buy.  It’s called a Shine Elegant Wearable Tracker.  It’s the tiny little device pictured above.  Isn’t it lovely?  It’s totally not like the pedometers I’ve had in the past!  Plus, Shine is exclusively available in additional colors at Best Buy including Silver, Black, Champagne and Topaz.

Shine is a tiny little device that’s built to empower people to be more proactive with their personal health.  I was fortunate enough for Best Buy to give me one of these little motivators to review.

What does it track?

– Steps
– Activities {such as swimming, biking, tennis, etc.}
– Sleep
– Calories

Additional features:

– It has a built-in clock
– It’s waterproof

Extra Accessories:

– Leather bands
– Sports band
– Necklace

Dimensions:

– Width 27.5mm
– Depth 3.3mm
– Height 27.5mm {& a weight of 9.4g}

Because the Shine is so small {about the size of a quarter} and so light that it’s barely noticeable.  The sports band is easily adjustable to fit the smallest or largest of wrists.   I love that there is no charging required!  All it takes is a coin cell battery that is replaced approximately every four months.

One of my favorite features is how it syncs automatically when you lay it on top of a device where you have the Shine app installed.  It’s so easy!  Plus, it makes it fun to set goals and track progress.

Okay, my absolute favorite features is how it doesn’t look like an activity tracker!  It easily blends in with other jewelry with the sports band and with the leather band I’m sure it would look just like a watch.  No one would have to know that I was tracking anything.  I love that!

If you’re looking for a Christmas present or New Years Resolution present for yourself, check out the Shine Elegant Wearable Tracker from Best Buy.  I think you’ll like it!

Sneezing Without Fear

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Poise, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #cleanandfreshswitch http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO.

Poise

I invited a lady to go on an overnight outing with me.  {I’ll keep her name private to protect her identity.}  This friend of mine turned down my invitation without giving a reason and since we’re so close I asked why.  She hem hawed around before sheepishly telling me that she was afraid to go far from home because she struggled with light bladder leakage.  I asked if she had tried Poise pads or liners and she hadn’t heard of them before.  Since our outing was a few weeks away I encouraged her to try them out in the mean time and let me know if she changed her mind about the trip.  She got back to me within the next week and was overjoyed at the freedom she felt from such a small purchase.  This changed her life in a real way!

My biggest blessing

Fast forward a few years and I experienced something I never thought I would.  Isn’t it funny how we think things will never happen to us?  Well, LBL {Light bladder leakage} happened to me.  My heart is racing just thinking about saying that “out loud” but it’s true and I think it’s an important issue for women to discuss.  After my darling little angel was born regular old panty liners didn’t cut it.  I was fine when coughing, exercising, and even laughing but sneezing was/is my downfall.  Especially with a little one growing inside of me now, kicking everything possible, I’m worried about LBL.  Worried that is, when I don’t remember to use Poise.

Matron of Honor

Poise liners has helped renew my self confidence.  I was a busy matron of honor this summer and no matter what stress, laughter, tears, or sneezes came at me I was prepared.

Are your ready to handle each day with Poise?  Right now you can print a $2 coupon for Poise.

5 Ways to Feel More Beautiful

5 Ways to Feel More Beautiful

I’ve been thinking a lot about beauty lately, as I always do, but this time I was focusing primarily on outward beauty.  You know, what everyone else sees and judges you by.  You know me, I think that people should spend the majority of their time focusing on inward beauty and developing better character traits, helping others, etc.  However, every woman wants to feel attractive on the outside too and that’s okay!  Going through life changes such as growing older, an illness, becoming pregnant {yep, that’s me!}, or gaining weight {me also!} can make us feel less than attractive…to put it mildly.  I was thinking of a few ways that I try to make myself feel more beautiful and I thought I would share them with you in case you need to feel more beautiful today.  Remember that you are beautiful, even when you don’t feel like it!

1. Have something sparkly.
Don’t tell your husband I’m telling you to go out and buy diamonds {Although that might not be a bad idea either! ha!}.  Keep something sparkly around you.  Lip gloss, nail polish, a sparkly pen, etc.  If you’re not into sparkles, then surround yourself with your favorite colors and textures.

In school, I was always terrible in English class.  Literature was great, spelling was okay, but grammar was pitiful.  {I can see all of you grammar folk shaking your head in agreement.  I know, I’m sorry!}  Most of my school notebooks were plain white or black but my English 101 notebook was beautiful.  My definition of beautiful changed from year to year but it was always something that gave me a little smile inside whenever I looked at it.  Surround yourself with things that make you smile.

2.  Make someone else smile every day.
I used to have a friend whose goal was to make someone smile every day.  This was the end all be all goal of his life and while I certainly didn’t agree with that I did take note of his personal challenge.  Obviously, it had an impact on me as I’m still thinking about it and writing about it 10 years later.  When you do something for someone else it makes you feel good about yourself.  That’s not why you should do nice things for others but it’s a nice side effect and it’s a good habit to get into.

3. Smile, smile, smile.
Studies have proven that smiling people are more attractive.  That’s a good enough reason to smile, isn’t it?  Plus, I read somewhere that your brain gets an instant mood boost when your facial muscles contract and that boost of happiness is maintained as people smile back at you.

That reminds me of a poster that was in our high school cafeteria that read, “Smile.  Start an epidemic.”  If smiling doesn’t come natural to you practice while you’re alone and then practice in front of others at least once a day.  Try it and see if you don’t feel more beautiful and confident.

4. Work out.
I know people are groaning as they read this step.  How? Well, because I’m groaning too.  I don’t like working out, at least in the formal sense of the word.  I don’t own tennis shoes or yoga pants.  Crazy, right?  I like music though and dancing silly with my daughter, I like taking exploring walks with her, I like swimming, and I like shopping.  Those aren’t typically things people consider exercise but every bit of activity helps keep you healthy and boost your spirits.  Any safe activity that raises your heart rate is exercise in my book.

When you exercise it gives you a spring in your step.  You’ll smile easier, you’ll feel good about yourself knowing you’re taking care of your body, and your face will just glow.

5. Surround yourself with smells.
Smells are the biggest triggers of memory.  The sense of smell is powerful.  Surround yourself with scents that make you feel good.  Wear your favorite perfume {discount perfume is okay too}, light a candle that embodies the current season, or keep your favorite Wallflower plugged in at work.  Be mindful of those around you that may have a sensitive sense of smell but if you can, allow yourself embrace different scents.  Wearing perfume will help you feel better about yourself and smelling it through the day will make you smile a little on the inside.

Those are my five favorite ways to make myself feel more beautiful.

What about you?  What do you do to make yourself feel more beautiful?

Breast Cancer Awareness Beauty Products – Shop for the Cure!

Breast Cancer Awareness Beauty Products

Each October I have mixed feelings when I see the color pink flooding the stores.  On one hand, I think it’s great that Breast Cancer Awareness is raising money and reminding people to get their regular check-ups.  On the other hand, I am sickened by all of the companies that promote a pink item in October and donate 0% of the proceeds to Breast Cancer Awareness.  Because I like to be an informed shopper and I like beauty products I’ve created a round up of beauty products that donate a portion of the proceeds {or a set $ amount} to breast cancer awareness or research foundations.  I do have my affiliate links included in this post because it took me hours to research and put together.  Trust me though, it won’t cost you a penny more if you buy anything after clicking the links on my site.

I have a few dozen more to add but I’ll get started with the beauty products that donate to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Check back on this post tomorrow for even more beauty products that “pay it forward.”

Breast Cancer Research Foundation:

Bobbi Brown Breast Cancer AwarenessThis year Bobbi Brown is donating $10 for every French Pink Set ($45) they sell.  You’ll get a lovely pink shade that can blend with many different skin tones and it comes with a brush too. The $10 of the purchase will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Estee Lauder Breast Cancer AwarenessEsteé Lauder is donating 100% of the profits from the Dream Perfume Compact ($50) to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The embossed compact is filled with the popular Pleasures fragrance.

Clinique Breast Cancer AwarenessClinique’s Dramatically Different Lotion ($38) recently got a formula makeover to give even more powerful hydration.  This new moisturizer comes with a pink ribbon key chain and with each purchase $10 will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

själ skincare
The Själ skincare’s Rose Aura Cleansing Set ($140) will donate 10% of each purchase to The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

It Works! Giveaway

A few months ago, I heard about a company called It Works! that boasted an unbelievable claim.  They said they could shrink the fat right off your body using nothing but a body wrap and less than an hour of your time.

Their claims seemed so outrageous, especially when coupled with photos like this:

It Works! Testimonial

An actual customer of Heidi’s lost over 5″ after one body wrap application

The first thought that entered my mind was, “I wonder if that really works?” Because I’ve had twins, people, and even though I work out and eat healthy, I still have a bit of a baby pooch that wasn’t there before.

Not only that, but the skin on my stomach looks like a sock that’s been stretched out one too many times.  I don’t have stretch marks, which is a miracle, but I also don’t look like I’m in high school anymore.

Imagine that.

So when I had the opportunity to try an It Works! body wrap myself, I jumped at the chance.  Even though I was skeptical, I hoped this kind of magic was real because so far, the garden gnomes and kitchen elves have been a huge disappointment.

Saundra and her daughter Heidi, two independent It Works! consultants, sent me one individual It Works! Ultimate Body Wrap.  I was kind of hoping for a vat of the stuff but apparently they don’t sell vats.  Yet.  However, the Ultimate Body Wrap comes in packs of four so you can plaster them all over yourself if you’d like, although you should try to restrain yourself to only two at a time just to be safe.

Since I only had one wrap, I had to decide where to put it.  You can use the Ultimate Body Wrap anywhere from the neck down.  But, my baby tummy had to be the first to go.

The body wrap was very easy to apply.  I simply unfolded it and wrapped it around my stomach area, magic-lotion side down.  It smelled a little like Vicks Vapor Rub and tingled a little like it too.  That’s because it is loaded with botanical ingredients like menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus.  The tingling sensation dies down as the lotion soaks in.

One wrap doesn’t go all the way around unless you’re a twig, but I was happy to see that even though I’ve very tall, it was able to cover the majority of my stomach and my hate-handles (let’s be real, people–there is no love there).

The directions said to wrap myself up in Saran Wrap to keep the lotion in place.  My husband found this part of the process highly entertaining.  Not in a, “Wow, Baby, you’re so sexy” kind of way but more like a “Ha ha hahahahahahah!” kind of way.

He’s so precious.

Even with my midsection wrapped up like yesterday’s pizza, I was able to walk around, wrangle children, and waste time on Facebook like usual.

The directions said to leave the wrap on for at least 45 minutes.  It also cautioned against leaving it on longer if this was your first time wrapping in case your skin was sensitive.  So, I tried to behave even though I kind of wanted to spend all day wrapped up in magic lotion, just in case the extra time made my backside smaller too.  It was a long shot.

It Works! Testimonial

Another actual customer shows significant loss after 1 application.

When it was time to take the wrap off, I rubbed the remaining lotion into my skin, as per the directions, and went about my day, making sure to drink plenty of water.  Saundra told me to drink half my body weight (in pounds) in ounces of water for 72 hours to assist the herbs in drawing toxins out of my body.  If I weighed 120 pounds (stop laughing) then I’d drink 60 oz. of water.

I drink a lot of water anyway, but it was encouraging to see that the It Works! products weren’t trying to make me skinny by drawing water out of my system so I’d shrink like a raisin.  Nope.  I was staying well hydrated.

By the evening of the first day (sounds biblical, right?) I was already noticing an improvement in the tone and texture of my skin.  My stomach felt like butter.  Anywhere the wrap touched was super-hydrated and springy like baby skin.  Even the little wrinkles around my belly-button (thanks, twins) had almost vanished.

I could hardly wait for the 72-hour mark to take my measurements.  I took three: one at my belly button, one two inches above the belly button, and one two inches below.  I didn’t notice any difference in the measurement above my belly button, but that’s understandable because I’m pretty much all ribs right there.

But, as I’ve aged, the Great Migration has started to happen so it made sense that I’d notice the biggest difference in the areas that are a bit more…south.  I lost 1” at my belly button and 1 ¾” two inches below my belly button!  Wow!  That’s not bad especially since the biggest differences are normally seen after more than one application.  I was pretty thrilled!  In fact, I’d have to say it works!

It Works! Side view

My own side profile pictures didn’t really do the wrap justice since I wasn’t quite willing to bare my belly for all of you. But You can already see how flat my stomach is becoming after just one application!

In fact, I think It Works! is the perfect thing to help get ready for all those summer events like weddings, graduations, and swim suit shopping expeditions.  You know.  Stuff.

So, we’re offering an It Works! giveaway so you can try the products yourself!  Heidi and Saundra got together and put together a prize package that’s almost as good as a vat of It Works! magic.  One winner will receive 1 Ultimate Body Wrap, 1 Facial Applicator (to tighten and tone the entire face), and 1 mini Defining Gel.  That’s a $60 retail value!

Homemade Cough Remedies – So you can rest better!

This post contains affiliate links.

Homemade Cough Remedies

I’m sure we’ve all had an annoying, irritating cough that won’t leave.  How does your family handle that kind of nagging cough?  I know that coughs can have their place in healing and should not always be suppressed however, I’m talking about a dry irritating cough that disturbs rest and needs to be managed.  My family, myself included, all have this up-all-night, headache-inducing, side-splitting cough.  When I haven’t been caring for my family or trying to rest I’ve been researching how to naturally suppress coughs.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m also taking DayQuil, NightQuil, cough drops, etc. but I know my little one can’t take those meds. so I’m trying to find her relief with natural remedies.  Plus, if it works for her I would rather take something natural instead.

I would like to take a moment to give little note of thanks here to all the moms, friends, and nurses I’ve asked for advice.  I appreciate your counsel, patience, time, and for you being around me while I sound like 90 year old chain smoking man. : )  No offense to 90 year old chain smoking men.

My disclosure: Please note that I am not a medical professional and I am not giving medical advice.  I’m just a mom seeking to find age old remedies to care for her family.  Please seek a professional for medical advice.

Here are the Homemade Cough Remedies I’ve found and tried:

  • – Soothing honey is said to protect the throat from dryness and irritation.  It’s also said to provide antimicrobial and antioxidant benefits.

A Penn State College of medicine study said that,”Honey did a better job reducing the severity, frequency and bothersome nature of nighttime cough from upper respiratory infection than dextromethorphan (DM) or no treatment. Honey also showed a positive effect on the sleep quality of both the coughing child and the child’s parents. DM was not significantly better at alleviating symptoms than no treatment.  Coughs are exhausting, disrupt sleep and account for about 3% of all out-patient doctor visits.”  “Consumers spend billions of dollars each year on OTC cough and cold medications despite little evidence that these drugs provide significant relief,” says Megan W. Manlove. You should NOT give honey to babies under 12 months because of the rist of infant botulism.

  • Buck Wheat honey is suppose to be the best.  It’s darker and thicker.
  • – Some have recommended a honey that was made within an hour or two of your home.
  • – Propping a child slightly helps to prevent the infection from settling in the lungs.  Jaime from Crazy Coupon and Freebie Fanatic recommends this foam pillow wedge.  She said that her girls always sleep with one.  I used a blanket under the mattress as a substitute on my little girl’s bed.  At night she usually rolls around too much for it to keep her propped up right but it seems to do the job for naps.
  • – Steam.  Our guest bathroom is small so it didn’t take long for the hot shower to fill the room full of steam.  We ran the shower with the curtain open and of course kept the baby away from the hot water.  We breathed in the steam for a few minutes each night before bed.  This has seemed to help!
  • Eucalyptus oil rubbed into the chest or feet is said to help loosen phlegm.  From what I’ve been told this option is for adults only.  LiveTRu.com is a great resource for essential oils.  You may also be able to find it at your local drug store or health food store.  Apply a carrier oil on your skin {including your hands} before applying the Eucalyptus oil to avoid stinging.  Olive oil works great for this and is something you probably already own. Never, ever ingest Eucalyptus oil orally as it is toxic.  Do not put near your nostrils or mouth.
  • Humidifier.  Cold viruses love dryness and you can fight it with humidity.  Keep a humidifier running around the clock but make sure you keep it clean. (Just for fun, I love these cute humidifiers! Hello Kitty humidifier, Train humidifier, & Owl humidifier)  To keep your humidifier clean I highly recommend adding Bacteriostat to keep the bacteria down.  I love this stuff because I hate slimy humidifiers!
Homemade Cough Remedies I haven’t tried yet:
  • – Drink boiled cinnamon, lemon and honey. Patricia, from My Randomness, said that this is a favorite home remedy of her family.
  • –  I hear that Gold Bee has some terrific honey products and one that is great to help with coughing.
  • – Boiled milk with ginger.  Bobbie, from Bobbie’s Bargains, swears by this.  Be sure to remove the ginger before drinking.
  • – Vick’s Waterless Vaporizer is said to work wonders. It’s also available in a smaller nightlight version.
  • – Add Kaz Inhalant to any brand of vaporizer.  This adds menthol vapors to the air which should help you breathe better.
